General Hospital Alum Michael Easton Talks Mental Health Breakdown & Needing To “Numb” The Pain

General Hospital (GH) spoilers note that fans are still reeling from last week’s news that Michael Easton was leaving the soap, as Dr. Hamilton Finn exited the canvas.

Easton posted a heartfelt goodbye on Instagram, and the good doctor headed to a 90-day rehab facility to help him with his drinking.

While fans know that Finn won’t be back on canvas anytime soon, everyone can’t help but wonder how the show will explain where he is when his three months at the treatment center is over.

Regardless, off the cusp of his GH exit, Easton sat down with fellow GHer, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) on his State of Mind podcast.

Most GH fans are aware of Benard’s podcast, which aims to increase awareness to mental health issues. Maurice has had a number of current and former GH colleagues on the show, as well as other daytime drama performers, celebrities, and experts.

Much like his character Sonny, Benard suffers from bipolar too and has been open about his condition. During Easton’s appearance, he talked about his GH character’s addiction issues and his own addiction issues in the past.

GH Spoilers – Alum Michael Easton Talks Major Loss & Self-Medication

During the podcast, Easton discusses the loss of his mom when he was young. He notes he had a breakdown and didn’t realize he was suffering from it at the time. He also talks about “self-medication” to numb and suppress the pain he felt.

Easton goes on to say that he is now the same age as his mom when she passed away. While he notes that he doesn’t feel old, this fact has made the year a very reflective one.

Easton adds that when he looks back at how he acted after his mother died, he’s ashamed. He didn’t treat others well and ran from people who wanted to help him.
