According to a new report from Daytime Confidential, General Hospital is reportedly casting a new African-American 20-something-year-old woman in a new contract role on the show.
The character has been described in the casting call as, “African American. 24-29. Beautiful, dynamic, complex.” And as opposed to a single or multi-episode guest arc, the character’s role will be contract – which means that they could remain on the show for multiple seasons or do a short arc and come back later.
Fans are already guessing at who this new character could be, and whether it’ll be someone they know. There are rumors that this could mark the return of one of the Wards, especially as General Hospital fans have, “quite the affinity for the late Edward Quartermaine’s (John Ingle) melanin-blessed progeny.”
There is generally a revolving cast of actors on long-running soap operas like General Hospital, and lead characters sometimes come and go frequently, which enables for new ‘lead’ cast members to join every so often. There has also been a push for diversifying these shows to reflect the changing demographics and viewership, and as such, it’s expected that one of the big four network soap operas would be adding more diversity to the mix. In fact, it’s almost surprising that it’s taken this long – but then again, they would have had to write in a role that felt worthy of a contract inclusion, given that most of the existing characters already have their plate full with all of the crazy things that happen in Port Charles on a semi-frequent basis.
What do you guys think about General Hospital casting a new African-American 20-something-year-old woman in a new contract role on the show? Do you think she will be related to the Wards and one of Edward Quartermaine’s progeny? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
