There are many things that go into a good recast, and it can vary from character to character. In this case, let’s take a look at the case of John “Jagger” Cates.
Originally played by Antonio Sabata, Jr., Jagger had many storylines in the 90’s including hot romances with both Karen Wexler (Cari Shayne) and Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil). He also appeared briefly on General Hospital spin-off Night Shift several years ago.
General Hospital Spoilers – John “Jagger” Cates Joined The FBI
Jagger hadn’t been heard from in years when he suddenly popped up earlier this year as an FBI Agent. He came to Port Charles to take down the mysterious Pikeman Group. He’s also the reason that Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) had to pretend to be dead for several years.
When Jason disappeared years ago, the FBI picked him up and forced him to make a deal. Either Jason worked for them undercover, or Cates would send Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) to prison for racketeering. Jason had no choice but to agree.

GH Spoilers – John “Jagger” Cates Had His Own Agenda
Once Pikeman was finally dealt with, Cates revealed his true agenda was to put Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Bernard) in prison for the rest of his life. He almost had Ava Jerome (Maura West) killed as part of his plot against Sonny.
But eventually Sonny had enough of Cates and shot him point blank right outside the Quartermaine boathouse. To date, no one has been charged with Cates’ murder although that could change at some point in the future. And just like that, Cates was gone.

We should point out that the reason Jagger didn’t work as a character this time around has nothing to do with the talent of Adam Harrington, who did an amazing job despite the fact that he looked nothing like Sabato, Jr.
The problem was that this new version of Jagger wasn’t anything like the original character. His vendetta against Sonny overwhelmed him and he became a one-note villain which is a far cry from the flawed but heroic character he once was. No one was sad to see Jagger go by the time he was killed off.
