General Hospital Max Gail Opens Up About Mike’s Struggles

General Hospital star Max Gail is opening up about his character Mike and his recent health struggles. Max, who plays Sonny Corinthos’ father on the hit ABC soap, says he was touched by how many fans have spoken to him about Mike’s struggles and how they can also relate to him, whether if it’s through their own personal experience or that of a family member.

Speaking to ABC Soaps in Depth, Max says that he’s had nothing but a positive response to Mike’s storyline. He told the publication, “There’s just been a warm response all the way around. There’s a lot of sincere feelings about the storyline and a real appreciation. It feels good!”

While there’s no doubt that Mike’s Alzheimer’s disease is heartbreaking, Max says that it’s a challenging storyline that he doesn’t regret taking on. He continued, “It’s been a great experience and in this medium, you get the unfold day by day. When I look back at some of the primetime gigs I’ve had? Wow. This is nothing like doing two scenes as a guest star in an episode about someone who has Alzheimer’s. The day-to-day storytelling opens you up to a kind of freedom and some better work. That’s the beauty of it.”

Max also says that he has found inspiration in friends who have had Mike’s illness and can relate. He added, “My dad used to tell me the same joke every time we talked. I’m spending a lot of time in the hereafter. I find myself standing in a room wondering what am I here after? Well, I find that happening now!”
