General Hospital News: Genie Francis Speaks Out On Laura And Kevin’s Future

General Hospital spoilers tease that Genie Francis, who plays Mayor Laura Webber Collins on General Hospital, has her own ideas on how the love story of Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom) and Laura should end – or, not end! In an article in Soap Opera Digest’s latest edition, she talks about what she would like to see happen, if she had her choice of what the writers would choose as the outcome.

She does say that she has really enjoyed playing out this storyline of Kevin’s supposedly deceased brother Ryan Chamberlain showing up after having been kept in Ferncliff by Kevin for several months, after he was alive and working for the DVX for over twenty years.

However, Francis also says it has been difficult acting Laura’s failure to understand and to pick up on Kevin not being himself in a very literal way over all those months. She said it was hard for her to act out someone playing dumb in a scene with someone when the answer was right in front of her face.

She also says if something like that was to happen in real life, and her husband, actor Jonathan Frakes of Star Trek: Next Generation fame, accidentally caused the death of another person, she would support him because of the guilt one deals with in such a situation.

Of course, she is relating Jonathan to Kevin, not to Ryan. She would worry for him, and forgive him. Francis finds it hard to imagine that Laura could have compassion for Ava Jerome (Maura West) and yet have a hard time forgiving Kevin.

She can understand being angry for a while and not understanding why Kevin felt he couldn’t share this with her, if the writers decide to have Laura not being able to forgive Kevin, then Francis doesn’t know who Laura is!

She also addresses Laura’s state of mind throughout all the months that Ryan had Kevin hostage in Ferncliff. She says Laura was confused at first, and hurt, not understanding what happened. Did Kevin fall out of love with her, was Kevin having an affair, was she fooling herself when she believed Kevin could and did love her?

She says of course the breakup devastated Laura, but Laura needs someone to love and focus her compassion on. When she became mayor, she turned all that love and compassion towards Port Charles and its people.

About Laura becoming mayor of Port Charles, Francis says when she first read through the script she really didn’t feel it. But when she watched herself in the scene on television, and saw Laura taking back her maiden name when she took the oath of mayor, she got chills! She said she saw it as Laura taking her power back and taking her own identity back.

Francis says she loves working with Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos). If she’s tense, he can look in her eyes and calm her down immediately. She says he has much the same calming effect on her as Tony Geary did all those years ago when they played Luke and Laura. She loves working with Maurice, and she loves the complicated history between their characters.
