General Hospital News: Sonya Eddy (Epiphany Johnson) Cause Of Death Revealed

General Hospital news reveals that actress Sonya Eddy’s (Epiphany Johnson) cause of death on Monday, December 19, has been revealed. According to TMZ, her close friend and producing partner Tyler Ford told the outlet that 55-year old Eddy died after contracting an “uncontainable” infection following a non-emergency surgery.

Eddy had a scheduled surgery on December 9 and was released from the hospital two days later. At some point during the next several days the actress began to feel ill and returned to the hospital on the 15th.

That’s when doctors discovered she had developed a serious infection and was re-admitted. Ford told TMZ that on Monday morning she was placed on life support, and she died later that night. Earlier today Eddy’s close friend Octavia Spencer shared the news of her passing on social media. At that time she wrote that, “The world lost another creative angel,” and did not disclose a cause of death.

Eddy debuted on the ABC soap in 2006. Her character Epiphany Johnson was an upfront and direct nurse at the Port Charles, New York-based show’s General Hospital. In real life, Eddy was also a licensed vocational nurse.

According to Variety, she appeared in 543 episodes and was last seen in October. The character was on the cusp of new beginnings, hoping to become a doctor and getting to know itinerant musician Marshall Ashford (Robert Gossett).

Immediately after the news of Eddy’s passing was announced, tributes for the actress whose credits include “Married…With Children,” “Monk, “Reba, “Seinfeld,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “Murphy Brown,” “Seinfeld,” “Home Improvement” and “Joan of Arcadia,” began pouring in.

General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini released a statement saying: “I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress, but as a friend. The lights in the hub of the nurse’s station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends and fans. She will be very missed.”

Eddy was a native of Concord, California. She was born on June 17, 1967, and studied theatre and dance at the University of California, Davis, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in 1992.
