General Hospital spoilers and updates reveal that the ABC soap will air Anthony Geary’s final episode as Luke Spencer as a tribute to the late actor.
They will pay tribute to the eight-time Daytime Emmy winner who died on December 14, with a special encore of the episode from July 27, 2015, Luke’s final exit from Port Charles.
The Special Encore Episode Will Air On New Year’s Day
This is one rerun you won’t want to miss; airing on January 1, the repeat looks back at the emotional hour that concluded Geary’s nearly forty-year connection with the soap.
Geary started on GH in 1978 after impressing the show’s executive producer, Gloria Monty, and became a key figure in soap opera history. He departed in 1983, made a short return in 1984, and then came back to the show in 1991.
This time he appeared as Luke’s doppelgänger cousin, Bill Eckert, a character he portrayed until 1993 before taking on the role of Luke again. Geary retired from GH in 2015, with one last cameo in 2017.
Luke Had A Mental Breakdown
The events leading to Luke’s exit started the previous year, in 2014, when he experienced a significant psychological shift. He began to behave oddly and increasingly unlike himself, engaging in criminal activities that alarmed his friends and family.
This disturbing version of Luke earned the nickname “Fluke” from viewers, who initially thought it was Bill Eckert returned from the dead.
In early 2015, there was much speculation about Fluke’s true identity; after a bomb went off on The Haunted Star, the fingerprints found at the scene matched Luke’s.
It was later disclosed that the person in custody was the genuine Luke, who had been sent to Shadybrook following a violent outburst in court.
Luke’s Repressed Memories Returned
Luke escaped Shadybrook to find his sister Patricia Spencer (Dee Wallace), thinking she knew why he broke down. After taking his wife Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), daughter Lulu Spencer (then Emme Rylan), and sister Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman) hostage, Tracy finally reached him.
Luke ran away again but returned to his childhood home, where repressed memories came back: he had accidentally caused his mother Lena Spencer’s death in 1963 and killed his abusive father, Tim Spencer, in self-defense.
In a special episode, Laura Wright played Lena, James Patrick Stuart played Tim, Chloe Lanier, who later played Nelle Benson played young Patricia, and Joey Luthman played young Bill and Luke.
This long-hidden secret fractured his personality, and “Fluke” represented his dark side. Luke was arrested and sent for treatment.
Luke Teamed Up With Laura To Rescue Lucky, Ethan And Little Jake
After his release, Luke teamed up with Laura Collins (Genie Francis) again, and they set out to rescue Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson), and Ethan Lovett (then Nathan Parsons).
Jake Webber (then James Nigbor) whom Luke believed he had killed in a hit-and-run-had also been captured by Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers), and Lucky brought him back to Elizabeth Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst).
Back in Port Charles, Tracy ended their marriage; heartbroken, Luke went back to his childhood home, confronted his past, said goodbye to his family, and decided to leave Port Charles to face his future alone.
In 2022, Tracy announced that Luke had died in a mysterious cable car accident in Austria, likely caused by Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy). Tune in on January 1 to see, if you didn’t the first time, or relive if you did, how Geary wrapped up his iconic time on GH.
