Looking at Nelle’s case, it seems it would not be something an attorney like Martin would touch. Nelle had unrealistic expectations that she was going to go free immediately. She was later denied and won’t be able to try about for about 18 months.
When Martin was prepping her, he told her that she wasn’t coming across as very likable. But he didn’t tell her that it wasn’t likely she go free that day. He admitted after the hearing that almost no one ever gets probation during their first hearing. And most of the time a lawyer isn’t needed used during hearings of this nature. It’s easy to understand why Nelle would want to have every bit help she can get. But why would Martin take her case?
General Hospital Spoilers – Nelle Benson’s Case Was A High Profile One
Perhaps Nelle was just a way to make connections in Port Charles. Nelle’s case is high profile on both sides, so some powerful people are invested in seeing what happens with Nelle’s case. A good way to make sure his name get out there is to take controversial cases. This would make sense because the other case he is working on is Franco Baldwin’s (Roger Howarth).
This case is an important one in this day and age as questions of identity have had a lot of litigation in recent years. Taking this case, win or lose, Martin would be front and center in cases of this type. So perhaps taking these cases are just about making a name for himself with Port Charles residents. Plus, it was obvious in his discussion with Kim Nero (Tamara Braun) that he was excited about Franco’s case. But that enthusiasm was nowhere to be found when he spoke with Nelle.
Another possibility is that Martin knows about Nelle’s case and is appalled that she was even granted a hearing so quickly when she hadn’t up until that point, even taken responsibility for the crimes she is serving time for. None of the things Martin said to Nelle seemed like something an attorney would say to someone that he wanted to help and at times at almost seemed as if he wanted Nelle to lose.
