General Hospital spoilers and updates tease in this week’s Soap Opera Digest that Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) will be devastated at Britt Westbourne’s (Kelly Thiebaud) health update.
Britt meets with a specialist in the treatment of Huntington’s Disease at the behest of good friend Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth) and receives terrible news.
General Hospital Spoilers – Her Huntington’s Disease Is Progressing
Britt has been having trouble swallowing in addition to the trembling in her hands she has been experiencing for over a year now. Austin had noticed her symptoms and under questioning, she admitted she has Huntington’s Disease, and he knew a specialist holding a symposium nearby across the border in Canada. He was able to convince the specialist, a Dr. Talone (Sharon Omi) to stop by GH and evaluate Britt and her symptoms.
Unfortunately, Britt does not receive the news she was hoping to hear, and Dr. Talone confirms her Huntington’s Disease has begun progressing. She calls her mother, Liesl, and says she needs to meet with her to talk about something important, although she likely tries to downplay the urgency.
GH Spoilers – Liesl Obrecht Devastated
Liesl’s portrayer, Kathleen Gati is close with Britt’s portrayer Kelly off screen and has said frequently she thinks of her as a real life daughter. Kathleen said this episode was the most painful and profound that she had filmed in ten years. Britta tells her mom about seeing Dr. Talone and that she was told her symptoms were progressing which means Huntington’s is taking over her body.
At first, Liesl approaches the situation as a doctor with years of expertise and tries to discuss the disease doctor to doctor with Britt. However, Britt stops Liesl, snapping at her and tells her she doesn’t need a doctor, she needs a mother, causing Liesl to switch gears from doctor’s coat to mother’s heart.
General Hospital Spoilers – Mother Needs Daughter Also
Britt is the only living child Liesl has, and she is understandably devastated that Britta will likely not live out a full life, meaning no husband and no children. Liesl needs her daughter just as much as Britta needs her mother, and although she may look out for new treatments that could stall the progress she must be mother first.
Liesl has had to deal with as big of a shock as Britt has, although Britt has suspected her disease was progressing for a while, while trying to hide it. Britt has largely been trying to deal with her devastating diagnosis on her own, and has obviously been in some denial; but now, mother and daughter will deal with it together.
