General Hospital fans have known Maurice Benard for his portrayal as mob boss Sonny Corinthos for more than 25 years. Maurice is now branching out into a totally different role in the movie Equal Standard. The movie will release as VOD (Video on Demand) on Thursday, May 14.
General Hospital Spoilers – Maurice Benard Stars In Equal Standard
Maurice Benard stars as a police captain in the VOD film Equal Standard. The film was directed by Brendan Kyle Cochrane while the script was penned by producer Taheim Bryan.
This unique cop film is set in New York City and involves race and rank, loss, and betrayal as a cop is shot by one of his own. NYPD Detective Chris Jones is played by Tobias Truvillion (One Life to Live), who is shot during a fight outside a local bodega.
The shooting leads to tensions rising between the cops and the communities they are sworn to protect. An impasse arises among the minority groups living in New York City who are fighting for justice. This is a world where persecution relating to skin color exists, while the fight for equal opportunity is impossible. As the battle continues in the film, the outcome will be determined, where life or death are the only available options.
GH Spoilers – Mob Boss Plays Police Detective
Maurice Benard plays Jones’ boss, Captain Chavat Issak. In the trailer, Benard can be heard telling his officers to keep their eyes open, as not everyone is in favor of the turnout.
This is following a confrontation by the father of the NYPD officer who shot Jones. Jones later recovers from his injury and returns to the precinct, where he comes face-to-face with the police captain. Ice-T (SVU, Law &Order) also stars in the film.
General Hospital Spoilers – ‘Racism Is Only A Mental chain’
According to the film’s synopsis, Equal Standard takes us through the battle between the characters but also shows “racism is only a mental chain,” but that it is a chain that can and will be broken in spite of insecurities, beliefs or differences.
The synopsis also highlights a well-known quote by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. To be exact, the quote is, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Benard spoke of the upcoming release, saying everybody should watch this film. Equal Standard will release at Video on Demand, starting Thursday, May 14. Readers can learn more from the film’s website. equalstandardmovie.com.
