General Hospital Spoilers: Not Everyone is Ticked That Sam Is Leaving — This Is Why

General Hospital spoilers reveal Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) has been a major player in Port Charles for most of the 21 years she’s been there.

So it came as quite a shock this week to many fans when they heard Monaco was being let go from the hit sudser. Recently describing the GH set as her second home, there is little doubt that it blindsided Monaco, too.

As she privately makes her peace with the decision GH writers have come to, the fans are furious — with some insisting they’ll stop watching the show altogether if GH doesn’t change their storyline. But not everyone is so committed to saving Sam/Monaco, and here’s why.

General Hospital Spoilers — She’s a Supporting Actress

As badly as many of us have loved the character of Sam — and loved Monaco even back in her vampiress days on Port Charles, a GH spinoff — she hasn’t really been a leading lady since then.

General Hospital Spoilers: Not Everyone is Ticked That Sam Is Leaving — This Is Why

Sure, she had some good, strong storylines over the years when she and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) were running things hot and heavy. Everyone wanted that romance to work out.

Could it have ended up happily ever after — forever? Probably not in soap land, but the point is that Sam was never really a Carly Spencer (Laura Wright). She doesn’t command attention.

She’s most often bouncing off of the man in her life, not running her own ship. The focus isn’t on Sam’s career as a PI or her trials with her kids so much as it is her being someone’s someone.

GH Spoilers – Hint She And Dante Falconeri Aren’t All That Hot

Speaking of being someone’s someone…the relationship between Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) and Sam started off flirtatious and fun.

We were ready to see both of them move on after they’d both had their fair share of heartache. But their flirty ways quickly fizzled into a normal, nuclear-family life.

While most of us wouldn’t protest against that, it’s hardly fodder for a soap like GH. We want drama. We want angst. We want struggles.

We want couples who continue to work through their difficulties, not a woman who can never make up her mind what she wants as she continues to concede to everything she says she doesn’t.

General Hospital Spoilers — The Waffling Got Old

That brings me to my final point. Sam used to be ballsy. She could hold her own. She was a major con artist for goodness sake.

Now, she seems to have lost all of her edge. She’s afraid of the world around her. She’s afraid of the men she gets involved with and the lifestyles they lead.

She was in love with Jason for over a decade, and attracted to his dangerous side. Then, suddenly, it was too dangerous and left her crippled with anxiety and fear for her family. She was in love with Dante, the good boy operating on the right side of the law — until he got shot.

Then she wasn’t comfortable with his line of work either. None of this jives with the risk-taker Sam has always been — and still seems to be in her profession.

So, for many of us, while we agree it’ll be very different without Sam around, we can’t help but feel the Sam we knew and loved was written off a long time ago.

It’s not a huge loss to part ways with the pale version of her that has existed in her place since. Stay tuned for more GH news and spoilers just ahead.

You are describing every “leading” lady on this show! NONE of them have hot, lasting relationships! NONE of them have great storylines! They are just tiene up in off of Sonny’s stories! There are MANY characters on GH that have boring storylines that should go. NOT Kelly!

    1. Keri says

Before there was Jason/Danny and Drew/Scout, there was Sonny/Lila. If Lila had lived, Dante would have been her half-brother and her mother’s live-in romantic partner. The dialogue practically writes itself.

    2. Kaye Hickman says

Lois with that stupid Brooklyn accent, Blaze and her mother need to go. Sam has always sounded like her voice isn’t right. She sounds like she is weak like she throws up alot.

  2. Long-time GH Fan says

All of the complaints the author made are legitimate, but they’re not because Kelly Monaco can’t act well or command the viewer’s attention. It’s the fault of the writers and the tepid storyline written for the Sam McCall character. Keep Kelly Monaco; ditch the writers.
Hire writers who know each character’s history and aren’t focused on the damsel in distress stories. Let the women of GH shine in their capabilities. Writers should also finish the storyline instead of leaving details hanging.

In my opinion the story lines for all characters become boring even if left on front burner from time to time. Just look at the year plus Pikeman story line which went no where. Writers have be overly creative to keep true front burner story lines in place when they have to be penned every day, 5 days a week for year after year. Whether it is the contract characters or supporting role characters, none have great material all the time. I do agree there is no necessity to remove Kelly from canvas unless it is her desire to move on. If it has to do with any personal problems, that’s another story viewers can only surmise. Hoping the pushes to keep Kelly on canvas are successful.

Kelly is now and always has been one of my very favorites on GH. Along with Finn. Losing these two will certainly put a damper on the enjoyment of the show. When someone is as well liked and good as Sam, how can you just fire her for no reason. Get rid of Heather, Ric, Nina Drew, Joslyn, Molly, a bunch more I could name before Sam. What happens to Dante, will he be next?? Poor writing!!

    1. Kaye Hickman says

I think they will put Dante and Lulu back together.

  5. Paula says

I think it would be a huge mistake to get rid of Sam.Not my favorite but she needs to stay.Better think twice.

  6. Bott Scaldwin says

While Sam is not among my favorite GH characters, she is by far the least annoying of the “Davis women”, so my only complaint about writing out Sam is that they’re not taking out her horrible mom and sisters along with (or instead of) her. Their only redeeming quality is that they make the show go by quicker — because I fast forward through most of their scenes.

  7. Jennie Gardiner says

It’s really not Kelly Monaco’s fault what happened to her character. It’s the fault of incompetent writers who favor propping characters like Sonny and Carly and not enough time and attention elsewhere. Its irritating that people blame Kelly or even Sam for that matter for her lack of storyline. I will always love Kelly and Sam and will always think GH has made a huge mistake in letting her go unceremoniously and disrespected a 20 plus year veteran on the soap!!

Sam story line good or bad isn’t because of her .they are the writers she can only act on a part that’s been given to her by the writers she is one of the best on gh and been around for 20 years and gh just writes her off so shameful gh has really went down hill if Kelly is leaves I’m done with gh all these new comers sure ant worth sticking around for so boring seriously gh do better I guess we all need to write gh off due to the fact the show has lost it grit huh so Boring #istandwith#kelly/Sam

  9. Keri says

Is killing Sam part of a strategic move to tighten plots and get the show moving in a cohesive direction or will it end up being another story that drags far too long and goes nowhere? Only time will tell but if I were the writers I’d start wearing steel-toed boots to work. They might mitigate some of the damage from constantly shooting themselves in their collective foot.

  10. Loraine Dunn says

I will not miss Kelly Monaco. I am so sick of her puffed up lips. Be comfortable with your looks lady and move on.
