General Hospital spoilers spill Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) has evolved over the more than three decades he has spent in Port Charles.
Long gone are the days of him running a strip club and drinking himself into a stupor. His violent tirades against everyone from his enemies to his lovers are almost hard to remember now.
His foray into a softer Sonny began with Nixon Falls and hasn’t slowed since. As he continues to mold himself into something more of a family man and hometown hero than a mob boss, I can’t help but question whether this is the way he’ll go out.
Indeed, at some point, Sonny — and Benard — will retire. We’ve already seen mention of it from both, and now we get to wait on pins and needles as the foreshadowing of what is to come teases that his departure could be sooner than any of us desire.
One of the biggest changes we’ve seen with Sonny over the last couple of years has been his developing relationship with Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth). These two never really saw eye to eye over the years, but more recently, they’ve surprised us.
When Ned fell into the Metro Court pool and bumped his noggin, he awoke as his famed alter ego, Eddie Maine (Wally Kurth).
When it became too much for Eddie to deal with life at the Quartermaine’s, it was Sonny who offered him a place to stay to keep him around for Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Olivia Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero).
This week, we saw Leo Quartermaine (Easton Rocket Sweda) stumble upon a violin Ned and Sonny went halfsies on for Giovanni ‘Gio’ Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza), echoing their buried hatchet status. Tally this under “things we thought we’d never see.”
Kevin Puts a Spin on It
Move over Ned, Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom) has something to say. He’s been busy in Europe while Laura Collins (Genie Francis) has mostly had to hold down the fort on her own in Port Chuck, but he’s so grateful to Sonny for being there for his wife when he couldn’t.
Yeah, you read that right. Going above and beyond to thank him for supporting Laura in her critical time of need, Kevin showed Sonny a level of respect we didn’t know he had for the guy.
This signals a shift in perspective among PC residents. Could others be warming to Sonny’s calmer demeanor too?
Retirement with the Right Side of the Law
Have you noticed Sonny’s other big fan as of late — District Attorney Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor)? I won’t go as far as to say she’s smitten with the guy, but she’s definitely lying to herself about her feelings for him.
With Benard mentioning this fall that he spies retirement in the next few years, and Sonny having discussed plans to retire from ‘the business’ soon, I’m wondering if Justine is the woman who finally gets him to lay down that torch and go live out his years as a normal law-abiding dude. Is he capable of it though?
Stay tuned for more GH news and spoilers to find out.
