General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that fans of the ABC soap are wondering if and when the venerable sudser runs out of new episodes due to the current Writers Guild of America writer’s strike.
General Hospital Spoilers – When Will General Hospital Run Out Episodes?
There were once oodles of soap operas to watch throughout the day, but in 2023 there are only three soaps running on network tv, with General Hospital the longest-running daytime drama.
General Hospital debuted in 1963, and the show has aired over 15,000 episodes and won 15 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Daytime Drama.
Two unions full of over 10,000 film, television, news, radio, and online writers started a strike on May 2, 2023. As is usually the case with a worker’s strike, the writers “want better pay, deals, and contracts after finding the current conditions unsustainable to make a living,” according to Cheat Sheet.
One of the WGA negotiating co-chairs, Chris Keyser, posted on the group’s website: “We have reached this moment today not of our own choosing but because the companies’ assault on writer income and working conditions have pushed us to an existential brink.”
GH Spoilers – Will General Hospital Start Playing Reruns?
The same day of the strike, late-night shows including Late Night With Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon went dark. Is the same fate awaiting GH?
Soaps air five days a week, and in general film weeks in advance. The outlet notes that the ABC soap has roughly four to five weeks of episodes in the can. Which means that at the current pace, the show will air new material until approximately Monday, June 5, 2023.
General Hospital Spoilers – The Show Is Running Out of New Episodes
During the last strike daytime dramas stayed fresh using writers and producers not part of the guild. But GH has resorted to reruns in the past and are prepared to do so again. During the COVID-19 pandemic the last new show during that period aired on May 21, 2020 and then old episodes that were first released in 2014 aired.
At that time ABC had almost two months of new episodes ready to air and they used a rerun each Friday called “Flashback Fridays.”

Well, like in COVID I will just quit watching and realize I wasn’t missing anything. The rating will tank and the writers will be out of a job! Don’t know why I started watching again
They could show old episodes of the Ice Princess story so younger fans can gain an understanding of what just went on. Otherwise I would be very happy if they showed old One Life To Live or All My Children episodes.
They build up the Ice Princess Storyline for over two years, then end it in one day????? What happened? I was all ready for another summer of adventurous excitement with maybe Luke coming back for one more time, and in one day it is over? Stupid, ridiculous, ….there are not enough negative words to describe this horrendous writing. I have watched GH since 1978, and never before has there been anything this bad. Was it the impending writers strike that made them do this????
