General Hospital Spoilers – Has The Leukemia Worsened?

Willow didn’t want to take chemotherapy because of the possible adverse effects on her baby, but she’s started experiencing pain. She’s not quite into the second trimester yet, when the chemo wouldn’t affect the baby as badly. She has been warned by her doctors that she is taking a risk of the leukemia worsening, which could also affect the baby adversely as well as herself but gambled anyway.

Willow goes in and gets checked up on most likely by Dr. Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) since Dr. Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) is out of town. The question is, has the leukemia worsened and will she have to make a hard decision concerning herself or her baby?

GH Spoilers – The Baby Could Develop Leukemia

There is a possibility that the baby could develop leukemia because his or her blood system and bone marrow is coming from Willow’s own system. That would be tragic, because the only outcome would either be death in the womb, miscarriage, or possibly a therapeutic abortion, even though it is rare. Obviously, Willow did not consider that possibility but then her doctors didn’t want to frighten her either-perhaps they should have since the situation is dangerous.

While congenital leukemia is extremely rare, there have been cases where it has happened; Willow probably went with the rare option in her decision. Then there is also the possibility that her own condition has worsened and she will risk her own life if she doesn’t begin chemo immediately; and the baby could die.

General Hospital Spoilers – Chemo Must Begin

Willow may be told her leukemia is advancing and chemotherapy must begin if she and her baby are to survive. Another dire diagnosis she may receive is that her spleen has become enlarged, which happens when abnormal blood cells accumulate, or the leukemia could be affecting Willow’s liver. Neither of these problems are good for either Willow or her baby, and a pregnant woman is usually not a good candidate for a spleen removal or liver transplant.

If Willow’s health update includes an enlarged spleen or a problem with her liver, or the leukemia is increasing she’ll have to make a hard choice. She may have to choose between treatment or death of either her or her baby, or even choose between her life and the baby’s.
