General Hospital Stars Max Gail and Laura Wright Open Up About Alzheimer’s Disease Storyline

General Hospital stars Max Gail (Mike Corbin) and Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos) recently sat down with talk show host Maria Shriver on Good Day LA to talk about the Alzheimer storyline on the highly rated daytime television show. They were also on hand to promote The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, Move for Minds. Maria is the founder of the movement.

Currently, both Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) have been dealing with Mike (Max Gail) and his decline in his mental health. Sonny is having a hard time seeing his father’s health deteriorate and that’s why he’s decided to help take care of him, despite their rocky past. He’s also trying to help his father recuperate some of his lost memories in the process, too.

When asked why General Hospital’s writers decided to take on this challenging topic, Laura explained, “The show has taken on many social stories over the years. I know they wanted to give Maurice Benard a story that really went inside and deep. They wanted a human, family story and wanted to bring back his dad. It’s an important story that needs to be told, so we are diving right in.”

Max agrees. He said that he didn’t even hesitate when General Hospital producers called him to return to the show for this very special storyline. He also said one of the reasons why soap opera stars are so talented is that they have the ability to work at such a fast pace when needed, as happens to be the case in Mike’s Alzheimer’s disease story.

The actor said, “It was a big draw and it’s a new world to me. It’s also touched my life in some ways.”

Laura also added that when it comes to the financial aspect of the disease, most of the characters on the show are in a place where that isn’t an issue. She does address the fact though that many caregivers to struggle to help their family members while knowing that the disease will only get worse.
