Maurice Benard Visits ‘Soapy’
Benard was the latest guest on the new ‘Soapy’ YouTube podcast hosted by besties, Rebecca Budig (The Bold and the Beautiful’s Taylor Hayes) and Greg Rikaart (Days of Our Lives’s Leo Stark).
Benard talked about a variety of things, from his run on All My Children (Nico Kelly) to his own YouTube podcast that focuses on mental health, ‘State of Mind’.
Benard got “real” during his Soapy interview, noting that he left AMC because he wanted to be a movie star, but after moving to Los Angeles, he went broke. He also mentioned that when his wife told him about GH calling, he boldly stated, “I am not doing another soap opera.”
Maurice Benard On Retirement
Well, it looks like he went back on his word, but GH fans are grateful for that! Benard entered the canvas in 1993 and is still going strong as one of the key players on the ABC soap.

With that said, while his mob boss character has had a lot of brushes with death, Benard explains that he’s never seen so much buzz (and worry) from GH viewers that Sonny could meet his demise, either from a heart attack or work-related things.
Benard chuckled and stated that it’s possibly because ‘they’ (fans) think he’s old now and close to retirement.
With that said, Benard talked about retiring, noting, “So right now I’m 62. Maybe another couple of years, three years. And then we’ll see what happens.”
Benard has entertained GH audiences for over three decades now and deserves to enjoy his retirement years. Anyone who’s seen his social media handles knows that off-screen, he is a family man who loves spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Still, even if he does retire, maybe he can bring Sonny back, now and again, for some special episodes.

Maurice has been one of my favorites since back in his AMC days. His handsome good looks and THOSE DIMPLES “had me at hello” and were (and still are) only surpassed by the ultimate mastering of his chosen profession.
I would be extremely sad to see him retire but have always seen in him what a family man he is and, that said, how he so richly deserves (and has more than earned) a nice, easy and joyful retirement life.
When the time comes, all of his millions of fans that feel this same way about Maurice Benard, the person, must wish him all the best and hope that he periodically stays in touch with us.
Much love and many thanks, Maurice, for enriching all of us over the decades with your presence.
I would love to see him stay till the end. But I understand that he needs to spend time with his family,Although GH would not be the same without him.
