The world came to a sudden stop in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. As COVID-19 swept across the globe, including the United States, TV, and Daytime Soap production stopped. It was initially thought it would only last two weeks, but it’s now three months later. Well, there is good news. The California governor said production can resume on June 12, but with some red tape.
TV and Soap Production Halted
In March, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many parts of the world to go under quarantine. Some went under complete lockdown. California and New York were hit particularly hard by the unprecedented virus. There is finally an update and we are excited about it!
22-Page White Paper Sent To NY and CA Governors
As we previously reported, a 22-page white paper was sent to the governors of California and New York, where the majority of filming sets are located. The document, created by The Industry-Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee Task Force, listed the safety protocols for safe filming production post-COVID.
Filming Can Restart On June 12, But With Red Tape
Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Public Health released a statement that production can restart no earlier than June 12, 2020. However, before you get too excited, there is still a lot of red tape.

“Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by the county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing, and testing.”
The statement continues, per Soap Opera Network,
“To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers. Back office staff and management should adhere to Office Workspace guidelines published by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Industrial Relations, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.”
Fans Won’t See New Episodes Right Away
Even though this is great news for The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and General Hospital, since they no longer have new episodes airing, there are still other approvals that are needed. Counties and cities must agree, but the biggest hurdle will be the Hollywood actor’s unions.
Even when filming does resume, don’t expect to see new episodes airing right away.
There is so much that goes into preparing one episode for broadcast that fans aren’t aware of. At the earliest, we are looking at two weeks, maybe longer. However, if they can get back to work, everyone would be grateful… not just the viewers, but the cast and crew, who have their own bills to pay.
