Rory Gibson Opens Up About Homelessness Before GH

Rory Gibson, the new Michael Corinthos on General Hospital, found tons of praise as an actor just the other day. It came when Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) announced that he would be hosting him on his State of Mind podcast this week.

Well, it happened as promised, and fans couldn’t love Rory more after his candid conversation with the veteran ABC star. Read on for more details about what went down.

Rory Goes Back In Time

As usual, the podcast started with Maurice introducing his guest. Not that the former Noah Newman from The Young and the Restless needed much introduction to ABC fans. Then, they moved on and chatted about themselves growing up. Both of them seemed to be a bit hot-headed in their younger years.

The real-life Sonny Corinthos also talked about the amazing love that fans have for Rory Gibson as the recast of Michael Corinthos. He said:

It’s just not easy to do, to come on a show and replace somebody else who’s been so popular for so long. but he has done it really, really quickly…I don’t know if it’s going to keep going, but…I have to say it’s been a while since I’ve seen that.

However, the conversation soon moved to more serious matters, as it so often does on the podcast.

Opening Up About Leaving Y&R

It seems that behind the scenes, after his run ended on The Young and the Restless, Rory Gibson and his fiancée, Alicia Ruelas, went through a very difficult time.

He told Maurice Benard, “Things got real, real bumpy for a while because we hit the strikes. I’ve never shared this publicly, but me and my fiancée were essentially homeless.”

Imagine that! Briefly, he found some work in “a small role” in Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire. Audition after audition failed, and his wallet got so tight, he and Alicia struggled a lot. In fact, she did some “modeling,” but that “dried up too.”

Elaborating on those horrible days, Rory added, “Neither of us were making any money, we couldn’t afford rent, and we had to bounce out. We were couch-surfing for almost a year.”

The Turn-Around

Things started to look up when Rory landed a job as a “trainer at Barry’s Bootcamp.” That came in 2024, and he enjoyed it. However, he really wanted to be an actor. So, he never gave up his dream of being back in front of the cameras, playing a role.

He’s philosophical about it now, saying that if Y&R hadn’t happened, and if he hadn’t been through hard times, then “maybe things wouldn’t have been the same.” In retrospect, he felt that his time as Noah Newman wasn’t all that fulfilling. And many fans agreed that he was underutilized anyway.

Fans React In The Comments

GH fans think that Y&R and other shows that turned Rory Gibson away are the losers at the end of the day. One of them wrote in the discussion area, “Rory owned this role the moment his character took the stage. He’s been absolutely fantastic. As for the person; I’m absolutely crushing on this guy more than ever. Great interview!!!”

Here are a few more of the responses from ABC fans:

  • I watched Rory on Y&R but I never knew anything about his…awful time after leaving…He is an amazing man and actor and I sincerely hope he stays on GH as long as he wants.
  • Hi Maurice you have hit another home run with Rory’s interview. He is a genuine person, an asset to GH and a really cool dude.
  • I watched Rory on Y&R and he was a great, but unfortunately his role wasn’t utilized as it should’ve been. I love how Rory has taken over the role of Michael…Rory has knocked it out of the park from day one.

Others mentioned Chad Duell, who voluntarily took a step back from the show as Michael. Nobody wanted to disrespect his talent, but they couldn’t help but praise the way Rory took over the part.
