General Hospital decided that what everyone saw happen in 2015 and 2016 on this soap just didn’t happen at all.
General Hospital Spoilers – Wants Us To Pretend We Didn’t See What We Saw
It’s not like 2015 and 2016 were so long ago that fans can’t remember what actually happened and it’s not like the internet and social media don’t exist for fans to dig up all the video evidence we need. Nikolas Cassadine (then Tyler Christopher, now Marcus Coloma) had Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig) shot and half the town knew.
His mother, Laura Collins (Genie Francis), knew. His former BFF, Elizabeth Webber Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst), knew. His cousin and her then-lover Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) and Drew Cain (then Billy Miller, now Cameron Mathison) knew. And yes, even Hayden Barnes knew that Nikolas put her in a coma for months on end when a hitman he hired shot her in the head. And she married him anyway, keeping a knife by her bedside drawer at all times.
GH Spoilers – Rewriting A Story For No Real Reason
But all that was thrown out the window this year when Shawn Butler (Sean Blakemore), the man who went to jail for shooting Hayden, was released and went looking for the real culprit when he pretty much knew it was Nik because he helped Hayden hire Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) to find the truth.

Everyone wanted to help Shawn find the culprit and clear his name, but they all knew already. At one point, Liz had a brief recollection of Nikolas admitting the truth to her, but he then gaslit her and told her she was remembering wrong and we felt like we were gaslit as well, despite knowing what we saw.
What was the point in this retcon when in the end Shawn is walking free and so is Nikolas? The story seems to have been dropped for now, along with the mystery of what happened to Hayden when Nikolas ran her out of town back in 2019.
None of it makes any sense and all it served to do was frustrate an audience that knows what they saw, as it was a pretty major story for the better part of a year. There were so many head-scratchers on GH this past year and this is right there up there at the top. Stay tuned to General Hospital weekdays to see if this story ever resolves.

And they wonder why viewership is down. Having head writers that don't care about GH's history, is causing many of us to rethink our loyalty to a show that disrespects its audience.
