Many fans of the Hallmark Channel series, Good Witch, are refusing to accept the cancelation of the series without a fight. In fact, they have launched a Change.org petition, telling Hallmark to keep the show on the air.
Petition To keep Good Witch On The Hallmark Channel
It was on July 9 that Hallmark Channel announced that the series would not be renewed for an eighth season. Obviously, this news was devastating to fans and cast members alike. At the time, Randy Pope, SVP, programming and development wrote that “‘Good Witch’ has enchanted viewers for over a decade with eight original movies, in addition to the seven-season series.” Pope went on to extend their gratitude and thanks to the entire cast and crew for their “dedication and hard work.”
Fans immediately hit social media to express their disappointment and shock over the cancelation of the popular fantasy show. Now, some fans have taken this a step further by launching a petition in an attempt to stop the cancelation.
At the time of writing, the Change.org petition to “Stop Hallmark Channel from canceling Good Witch” has received 3,611 signatures of the required 5,000. The petition is addressed to the Hallmark Channel, Crown Media (which owns Hallmark) and Whizbang Films, the company that produced the Good Witch film series that inspired the show.
In the text of the petition, fans write, “Good Witch has been among us for 13 years… 8 movies and 7 seasons that have all kept us on our toes for years. For some people, this show has kept them sane in hard times and for some, it’s given them joy just watching it.”
Was Falling Numbers The Reason For Cancelation?
The Hallmark Channel didn’t mention the show’s ratings when they announced the cancelation. However, in their petition, the fan did cite falling numbers. The petition refers to an article showing a decline in viewership of 17 percent from the last to the current season.
The fans suggest that this drop in viewership is due to the fact that fans outside the US and Canada can only access the show on Netflix. At this stage, the streaming channel only offers seasons 1 through 5.
The person who launched the petition wrote that they are sure no one wants to see such a good show come to an abrupt end, when we know there is much more to the story. Meanwhile, “hundreds of thousands of people” are eager to know the rest of that story.
