For eight years, viewers had another option if they didn’t want to watch football in the Super Bowl. They could tune in to Hallmark for the annual Kitten Bowl, where they could watch kittens play around for three hours. However, the tradition will no longer continue this year in the network but fans of the show may find these cute kittens in a different network as GAC Media looks into acquiring them.
“While we are not currently developing original animal-centric programming, Hallmark Channel is pleased to support partners like North Shore Animal League America as part of our commitment to social responsibility initiatives,” a Hallmark Channel representative shared ON Facebook on February 5.
Hallmark Channel Spoilers – Former Crown Media Boss Express Dismay Over Cancellation
The former president and CEO of Crown Media, Hallmark’s parent company, Bill Abbott, took to Twitter to air his disappointment. He said everyone who’s involved in Kitten Bowl should be proud of this passion project.
Abbot played an active role in the show and worked closely with Beth Stern. Not only that, adoption events were held by animal shelters all over the country during the Super Bowl weekend. This event, which was in collaboration with the TV special, helped 75,000 pets find their forever homes.
Abbott helmed Crown Media for 11 years and exited in 2020. He went on to acquire Great American Country, which is now known as GAC. It was then divided into two brands, GAC Living and GAC Family.
The show may be gone but Abbott encouraged everyone to continue supporting Animal League.
Hallmark Channel Spoilers – Animal League Comments On Kitten Bowl’s Cancellation
Joanne Yohannan, senior vice president of operations at North Shore Animal League America said that they were grateful for Hallmark Channel’s recent donation of $25,000 even if they decided to cancel the show.
Another insider shared that the animal shelters were upset when they learned the news. A source also teased that Abbott may be considering bringing the annual event to GAC.
GAC is reportedly “excited about the potential opportunity” and it’s having a meeting this week to determine if it could host the Kitten Bowl in 2023.
