Executive producer Phoef Sutton stepped onto Chesapeake Shores last year. With that change at the helm comes shifts in both casting and focus. Sutton told ET that viewers can look forward to getting a stronger understanding of the O’Brien clan.

“Everyone is entering a new phase of their lives,” the Chesapeake Shores exec producer noted.

“Kevin and Sarah were married, Connor was growing up and entering this new law firm and Megan and Mick were beginning to reconcile with their relationship. Bree had the success of her play in London, added Phoef. 

Add in the previous back-and-forth tension between Abby and Trace, and Sutton sees the season as “a maturing of the group, a feeling of growing up and moving on with their lives in an interesting way. I wanted to focus on the family and their relationships with each other.”

Chesapeake Shores Spoilers – How Will Jesse Metcalf’s Departure Impact Chesapeake Shores?

When Jesse Metcalf (who portrayed Trace) shocked fans by abruptly exiting Chesapeake Shores, he also stunned the cast, producers, and writers. Metcalf’s departure “came fairly late in the day,” admitted Sutton.

Given that Jesse walked off only a few weeks prior to the start of production, writers felt forced to pen a believable method of writing off his character.

The Chesapeake Shores writers evaluated several options. But ultimately, Sutton revealed that the group would manage Metcalf’s exit through flashbacks.

In that way, Chesapeake Shores can remain authentic to his character, including that sweet kiss concluding season 4.

“We all decided that it would be best if it happened in the past, so that Abby had moved on from it a little bit,” explained the executive producer.

By timing the flashbacks to occur two months prior before the season 5 premiere, Chesapeake Shores viewers will understand that the couple attempted “to hold on to an old love that is not viable anymore and I think they realized that.”

Sutton sought to put a positive spin on Jesse’s exit.

“No matter how smoothly you think it’s sailing, there’s something that’s going to throw a monkey wrench into the thing and there’s going to be some challenge you’re going to face,” reflected the exec producer. “And that was it. That was ours. So we just nodded, rolled up our sleeves and got to work on that.”

As a result, he feels that the writers benefited by getting “a whole new area to work with, to make the show fresher and newer.”

And although the writers had to rush to find out the perfect way to write off Trace, Chesapeake Shores viewers may also benefit by renewing their interest in what lies ahead for Abby and the rest of the cast.

Chesapeake Shores Spoilers – Who Replace Jesse’s Character Trace?

Looking ahead at season 5, Chesapeake Shores fans can expect to see a completely different character replacing Jess’s character Trace.

“We weren’t trying to cast the same character to play the same kind of role. It was a completely different role, so I said, “I want this character to be completely different from Trace.” If Trace is sort of the James Dean character, I want this character to be more of the Robert Downey in Iron Man,” summed up Sutton.

As a result, viewers will see a replacement (portrayed by actor Robert Buckley) with an “upbeat, optimistic, looking around the world, almost ADD, almost bouncing off the walls type” of personality.

This character will enter the show as Abby’s new business partner. Watch for the two to “fascinate and annoy each other in an amusing way.”
