Hallmark star Jonathan Bennett to star in Spamalot on Broadway
Hallmark star Jonathan Bennett, 42, is excited to be heading to Broadway to star in a revival of the musical Spamalot. He will be taking over the role of one of the show’s original actors just two months after it opened.
Speaking to People, Bennett said, “It’s my dream come true. I’m so pumped.”
The musical is based on a book and lyrics by Eric Idle and is “lovingly ripped off” from the classic movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The synopsis of Spamalot reads:
Everything that makes a great knight in the theatre is here, from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls, rubbery shrubbery, and of course, the Lady of the Lake.
When does Jonathan Bennett take over the role?
Michael Urie, who is currently performing the role in Spamalot, wrote on X/Twitter: “I am gutted to take my leave of @SpamalotBway, it’s the most fun thing ever. I will miss my fellow clowns and the wonderful people at the St James Theatre. Come see me before 1/21 and then the wonderful #jonathanbennett as Sir Robin from 1/23!”
The reason for Urie’s exit on January 21, is that he is to star in a production of Once Upon a Mattress at New York City Center. His role starts on January 24 and runs through February 4. Michael will then start filming a new role in a TV show.
Meanwhile, the show shared its own message on X/Twitter, welcoming Jonathan Bennett to the show writing:
“On Wednesdays, we ordain new knights! We’re welcoming Jonathan Bennett as he makes his Broadway debut and embarks on his quest as Sir Robin starting January 23rd.”
