As When Calls the Heart fans know so well, time flies when you are having fun and now the show is celebrating its tenth anniversary on Hallmark Channel. Fans can now learn some surprising and fun facts about the popular show.
When Calls the Heart started out as a movie
WCTH fans may be surprised to discover that the Hallmark series was originally a movie. Released in 2013, When Calls the Heart starred Maggie Grace, Jean Smart and Stephen Amell, along with Lori Loughlin as Abigail in both the film and the series.

Meanwhile, producers initially planned to film the Hallmark series in Colorado. However, according to the Denver Business Journal, they switched film locations to Vancouver after it “outgrew the state of Colorado’s film incentive program.”
WCTH interesting cast facts
Meanwhile, When Calls the Heart’s beloved stars Daniel Lissing and Erin Krakow, popular with all viewers, asked showrunners if they could write Jack Thornton and Elizabeth Thatcher’s wedding vows.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Lissing explained, “Erin and I had sat down together and I talked to her about the potential of writing our own vows, as Jack and as Elizabeth,” adding that they took the idea to the producers. Lissing added that producers told them they know their characters better than anyone else does, so they did write the vows, adding:
I wrote Jack’s vows and she wrote Elizabeth’s, and there’s that connection there. You can feel the love between these two characters, and Erin and I, as actors and as friends, have a lot of love for each other, so we really had each other’s back through that whole scene.
Meanwhile, Jack and Kristina Wagner also felt connected to their characters, former spouses Bill and Nora Avery. Moreover, the couple plays a General Hospital married couple, Frisco Jones and Felicia Cummings. In fact, they were even married to each other in real life from 1993 to 2006.
In an interview in 2015, Jack explained that while they were comfortable working together on General Hospital, it was “very frightening to work together again,” adding: “these are new characters.” Moreover, he added that they really worked through it and have a great chemistry together.
About the WCTH costumes
Some fans have noted in the past that the costumes worn in When Calls the Heart are not historically accurate. It turns out they were never meant to be. Hallmark Channel asked the costume designer, Barbara Gregusova, to keep the costumes similar to those on the rest of its shows. While it didn’t necessarily reflect the series’ time period, it worked out well, money-wise.
“We don’t really have a budget for me building costumes from 1910,” Gregusova told TV Insider. “So that’s why it’s easier to incorporate that modern feel, because I can go to a store and buy something.”
When Calls the Heart season 10 and 11
As fans look forward to season 10 of WCTH, premiering on July 30 with 12 episodes, they also know there will be an eleventh season. As Hallmark Channel announced the premiere for season 10, they also confirmed that season 11 is in the works.
“I am beyond excited for season 10 of When Calls The Heart to premiere,” said Erin Krakow at the time. The cast member and producer added that the new season “is full of beautiful moments and exciting twists and turns. I can’t wait for the Hearties to see what we’ve created for them!”

I’m so thrilled, proud and grateful to Hallmark that the show has been renewed for season 11. We have so many more stories to tell. With our amazing cast, crew, and brilliant writers, there will be no shortage of romance and new adventures for the residents of Hope Valley!
