It hasn’t been a while since we got confirmation that Hallmark has greenlit another season of ‘When Calls the Heart,’ and we’re already receiving more news to that end.
Hang tight while we fill you up on why season 14 of the beloved Soaps drama won’t be returning with this particular character.
Reason Behind Melissa Gilbert’s Unexpected ‘When Calls the Heart’ Exit Revealed
It seems that the saying that ‘when one door opens, another closes’ might describe this new era of ‘When Calls the Heart.’
You might remember the news that Lori Loughlin, one of our favorite ‘When Calls the Heart’ characters, has been cleared to return to the series. Yeah, now we’re learning of Melissa Gilbert’s exit.
Well, if we’re weighing tit for tat, I’d say Loughlin’s return trumps Gilbert’s exit. Not saying that the latter’s character Georgie McGill, who is a forensic investigator, is not a particularly memorable one, but I’m sure you get my point.
Anyway, Gilbert publicly shared this piece of news in an Instagram post on Thursday, July 16. She wrote: “Many people have asked if I will be returning to ‘When Calls the Heart’ this coming season. The answer to that is no I will not.”
“I am told this is due to budget issues,” she continued, “That said, I wish all my sweet friends in Hope Valley a wonderful and successful Season 14.”
“I will be eternally grateful to my dear friend [show creator Michael Landon Jr.] for giving me the chance to bring Georgie McGill to life,”
Gilbert added in the post’s caption. “It was a lovely couple of seasons, but it’s time to say farewell. When one door closes, another one opens. Looking forward to whatever comes next.”
Hallmark Channel Issues Statement on Melissa Gilbert’s Exit
While we’re being told budgeting is the problem, we know that Hallmark, and most especially this show, has a reputation for steering clear of controversies.
For example, the reason we haven’t seen Loughlin’s Abigail Stanton character around for as many seasons is because of her involvement in the 2019 Varsity Blues scandal.
This time around, while Gilbert, 62, is not directly involved in this scandal, her husband Timothy Busfield has been charged with child sex abuse.
His case is expected to start in May 2027, though he continues to vehemently deny the allegations. Gilbert stands with her husband, and believes he will be 100% exonerated.
While Gilbert tells us that her character, who happens to be Jack Wagner’s Judge Bill Avery’s love interest, was written off because of budgeting issues, Hallmark would instead reveal that her character’s storyline simply “concluded in Season 13.”
“We adore Melissa and are always grateful when we get to work with her,” the network added in their statement.
‘When Calls the Heart’ season 14 is expected to drop sometime in the spring of 2027.
