According to Hallmark’s official synopsis for the movie, the story involves Viviana Serrano (Laura Rosguer) as an aspiring ballerina and assistant choreographer. She joins forces with Natalia (Jamie Gray Hyder), a retired ballerina from the famous New York Ballet.
As the pair works together, with the help of lighting designer Mateo (Ektor Rivera), Natalia gets to spend time with Vivi’s big, loving Puerto Rican family. The family encourages Vivi to bring her Latin dance training to her ballet. Together, they create a surprise reprise of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy… but with a twist.

Sugar Plum Twist is part of the Movies & Mistletoe programming event on Hallmark Movies Now. It is always interesting to find out what kind of roles the cast members have played in the past, mostly completely different from a Hallmark Christmas movie.
For instance, Jamie Gray Hyder, who plays Natalia, is known for her voice acting and motion capture work in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. On top of this, she is known for her role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Laura Rosguer is an actress and writer, known for her roles in Sorority Secrets (2020), StartUp (2016) and Jenni Rivera: Mariposa de Barrio (2017). She has also been seen in Club 57.
Meanwhile, Ektor Rivera (Hector “Ektor” Ramon Rivera Alicea to give him his full name), is a Puerto Rican actor, singer and visual artist. Rivera has a history on Broadway, playing the lead role of Emilio Estefan in the musical On Your Feet! He has also performed in many concerts and special events, including the Tony Awards Billboard’s Series, CBS Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in Times Square, New York City. However, he has also starred in Fantasy Island.

Sugar Plum Twist comes from the production company Synthetic Cinema International. Meanwhile, Jennifer Insogna and Tracey Baker-Simmons are both executive producers. Producers include Andrew Gernhard, Colin Theys and Dustin Rikert. Molly Mayeux is the Line Producer, while Jason Sallee is a co-producer. Eric Close directed the movie from a script by Cas Sigers Beedles.
