‘The Way Home’ Finale Mystery: What Stopped Elliot’s Proposal, What We Know!

Hallmark Channel The Way Home Spoilers: Co-Showrunner Reveals the Real Reason Elliot Didn't Pop The Question To Kat In The Season 3 FinaleHallmark Channel The Way Home spoilers and updates reveal why Elliot Augustine (Evan Williams) didn’t propose to Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh) in the season three finale. Read on to see what the co-showrunner for the series had to say about the reason why.

Why Elliot Didn’t Propose To Kat

The season 3 finale of The Way Home was packed with unexpected developments, including a near-proposal between Elliot Augustine (Evan Williams) and Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh).

Co-showrunner Alexandra Clarke commented on the cliffhanger during an interview with TVLine on March 17, saying, “That is such a typical Elliot thing. He needs his perfect moment.”

In the finale aired on March 7, Elliot and Kat engaged in a heartfelt discussion about their relationship.

This was following a brief disruption caused by his ex-wife, Emma Baker (Miranda Millar), and her 1800s love interest, Thomas Coyle (Kris Holden-Ried). “Let’s just love each other as we are,” Elliot told Kat, sealing their reconciliation with a kiss after both acknowledged their past mistakes.

Will Elliot And Kat Wind Up Together?

As they separated, Kat observed that Elliot’s father had returned the family ring. The diamond had once belonged to his mother and their ancestor, Susanna Augustine (Watson Rose), with whom Kat had formed a bond during her travels to the 1800s.

When asked about his plans to propose, Elliot shared, “I will find the perfect moment;” in response, Kat kissed him in celebration, confidently stating, “I know it’s going to be perfect.”

Meanwhile, Clarke playfully remarked on the sweet exchange between Elliot and Kat, describing it as “spontaneous.” However, it was Elliot’s quest for perfection that prevented it from evolving into a full proposal.

Acknowledging Their Love Was An Important Step

Clarke emphasized the significance of the characters recognizing the need to love each other for who they are in the present, rather than who they used to be.

“It’s crucial for them to express this to one another,” she stated. “When you really think about it, they’ve been enamored with their former selves instead of embracing their current, imperfect selves.”

She pointed out that the characters are “flawed” and carry “burdens and trauma” that have hindered their romance on multiple occasions. “Acknowledging this and expressing a desire to love each other as they are now, with a fresh start, is a monumental step for them,” Clarke shared.

Kat Had To Leave Thomas In The Past To Choose Elliot In The Present

While Kat’s decision to choose Elliot in the present during season 3 meant leaving Thomas behind — quite literally — Clarke emphasized that both forms of love hold significance for Kat.

“The love between Thomas and Kat is fleeting, intense, dangerous, passionate, and a wild, boiling force,” the showrunner described.

In contrast, Elliot, who has cherished Kat since childhood, represents a “constant.” Clarke elaborated, “It’s slow, easy, familiar, and safe.”

Even as Kat and Elliot reunite at the season’s conclusion, co-showrunner Heather Conkie admitted that the potential for their breakup created considerable stress for the team.

Kat And Elliot’s Self-Sabotaging Drives Co-Showrunner Heather Conkie Crazy

Conkie expressed to TVLine, “They both really frustrate me. It’s like, ‘Seriously, enough already!’ But that’s just part of their personalities.”

He was commenting on Kat and Elliot’s tendency to self-sabotage leading up to the finale. “It’s unclear if they’re truly meant to be a couple; every time they seem to get closer, something comes up that makes them question whether they’re right for each other or not, and I’m honestly not sure.”

Chyler Leigh Says Kate And Elliot Have A Ross And Rachel From “Friends” Vibe

In January, Leigh shared with Us Weekly that Kat and Elliot share a dynamic similar to Ross and Rachel from Friends-she explained, “You need that little bit of back and forth. When they exist in such a fantastical world—something that’s hard to fully grasp—we find these characters in situations where they ask, ‘What do we do in real life?’”

The actress added, “When one adventure seems to conclude, where do we go next-there are many moments of reality checks that we don’t see regarding Kat and Elliot’s relationship.”

Although Kat and Elliot’s engagement is currently on hold, fans can look forward to the next chapter of their romance when season 4 debuts.

Hallmark Channel renewed the show earlier this month, but the release date for the new season has yet to be revealed; all past episodes are available for streaming on Hallmark+.

The Laundrys need the pond because they can’t see what’s happening in the moment. Alice pointed out to El about Kat not knowing what his dad was like, and she was his best friend. Colton was disappointed Evie wasn’t at the wedding. He didn’t realize his best friend was in love with him either. Kat seems eager to get Susanna’s ring. It was in the 1800’s but Susanna told Kat she didn’t like men. She only saw them as protection because women didn’t have any rights. The show seems to have everything fit like a puzzle. What does the clock that was in the wall do? Alice interned for someone who makes all-natural cosmetics. Alice loves music so why did she come back from her father with the T-shirt from that company? It would only make sense if the clock could bring somebody forward (which wasn’t put in the wall till the 1920’s.) The fact is Susanna grave (which is a plague, and the other founding families have headstones) has her last name as Augustine. Are there other Augustine’s in the past? Rick and Vic had to have kin. The show doesn’t give family tree information so it’s a little hard to figure the direct lines from Aunt’s or Uncle’s. Same with Jasper he was vague about his relationship to Thomas. The showrunner teased the note left with baby Elliot wasn’t the complete note. Did somebody move the baby from the pond to Colton’s doorstep? It’s either a different baby or that person took part of the note. I’m guessing whoever left baby El at the pond knew someone would move him to the doorstep.
