Set in a small mining community on Canada’s frontier, “When Calls the Heart” follows how the closure of a coal mine impacts the town. Originally named Coal Valley, the town becomes renamed Hope Valley. And that renaming reflects how the hopeful changes that take place in the community.

When Does ‘When Calls The Heart’ Return?

That hopeful spirit is expected to continue when the Hallmark Channel premieres season 9 of “When Calls The Heart” this year. Still taking place in an earlier era, the ninth season of “When Calls The Heart” will show Hope Valley growing, reported Deadline.  Extended over 12 episodes, the new season will debut at 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 6. 

Erin Krakow stars as Elizabeth, with the plot focusing on the race to become mayor of Hope Valley. Indicative of the fact that only a few years have passed since “When Calls The Heart” established itself as a 1910-era romantic drama, the entire town gets into the spirit of the election. Relationships take twists and turns as Elizabeth (Krakow) and Lucas (Chris McNally) seek to understand each other.

Also starring in season 9 of “When Calls The Heart,” Jack Wagner, Pascale Hutton, Kavan Smith, Paul Greene, Andrea Brooks and Kevin McGarry will play key roles. The series originated from a novel by Janette Oke novel. One question long-time viewers may ask. Will Lori Loughlin return?

Lori appeared in the first six seasons of “When Calls The Heart.” But in 2019, Loughlin’s involvement in the college admissions scandal caused the Hallmark Channel to drop her. Lori’s fans can, however, view the actress as Abigail Stanton in Season 2 of the spinoff series “When Hope Calls.”
