British Columbia-born actress, Amanda Wong, recently spoke to Daily Planet about her role in When Calls the Heart. She opened up about the honor she has in portraying Mei Suo in the Hallmark series.
According to Amanda, having an Asian character in the Hallmark series highlights a new narrative not usually seen in period shows. In the interview, she said that growing up, she didn’t really see herself represented in the media much, especially in period dramas.
She said when she thinks about When Calls the Heart, she believes every actor and actress in Vancouver knows about the show. Wong added that they would all love to be on the Hallmark show. However, she would have never guessed that she would have an opportunity that she could pursue.
Meanwhile, Mei is the first Asian character in the Hallmark series. Meanwhile, previously the Canfield family was introduced in season 8 as the first black family in Hope Valley,
“You look at these types of films and it seems Asian people don’t have a place in the narrative,” she said. However, Amanda added that this isn’t true as there were Asian people around at that time. It’s just that they are “never really highlighted in any type of way.” According to Wong, to play this character that is so well written and to share a little of her culture with fans is “such an honor.” She added that she is grateful for the experience.

According to Amanda, Mei is very educated and very capable as she arrives in Hope Valley. In fact, she would say that she is very courageous and stands up for herself. Wong said that Mei has tenacity, courage, and conviction, but it is also within that time. Meanwhile, there are certain things that limit women, especially Asian women, that Mei has to overcome.
Amanda added that Mei is not without flaws, but she is a warm individual who loves animals and children.
About the Hallmark actress
It turns out Amanda Wong graduated top of her class at the University of Hong Kong. She speaks several languages and has a Master’s degree in journalism. In fact, prior to entering an acting career, Wong worked as a journalist for news outlets like Bloomberg and Al Jazeera.
