The character has been central to the drama, romance, and small-town charm of Hope Valley, with viewers rooting for him to find his happily-ever-after with Elizabeth Thornton (Erin Krakow).
But now, as Season 13 wraps up, whispers are swirling that Lucas—and possibly Chris McNally himself—may be stepping away from the series.
A Finale Full of Big Decisions
The Season 13 finale aired on March 22, delivering celebration, romance, and life-changing decisions for many Hope Valley residents. For Lucas, the moment was pivotal.
He announced to the town that he would be stepping down as governor at the end of his term—a role he had faithfully served for the past three seasons.
He also endorsed Mayor Hickam (Samantha Ferris) from Benson Hills as his successor, expressing gratitude to the community while hinting at someone who had guided him through it all.

Though Lucas didn’t name her aloud, everyone knew he was referring to Edie Martell (Miranda MacDougall).
In a heartfelt declaration, he called her his “North Star” and shared, “Her brilliance, determination, sheer grit, and grace lit the way and will always, always inspire me.” It was a moment that left fans swooning and speculating in equal measure.
Later, Lucas and Edie discussed the big announcement. Edie revealed she would be leaving for New York the next day to work in legal aid for a few months, casually asking, “Maybe we could see what we are when I’m back?”
Lucas, careful but always willing to take a leap for love, suggested he could join her and help with the work. When Edie kissed him, the answer seemed clear—their story was entering a new chapter.
Leaving Hope Valley—or Just a Temporary Goodbye?

With Edie headed to New York and Lucas stepping down from office, the season closed on a note of uncertainty. Will Lucas leave Hope Valley permanently, or will the couple return after a brief stint in the city?
On one hand, Edie’s plan was originally temporary, and they could easily resume their life together back in their beloved town. But the lure of meaningful legal work in New York could extend their stay, leaving fans to wonder if this marks the start of Lucas’ exit from the series.
Chris McNally Reflects on His Time in Hope Valley
While no official statements have been made regarding Chris McNally’s future on the show, the actor has previously shared his thoughts about being part of such a long-running series. In a January 2026 interview with Good Housekeeping, he reflected:
“The longevity of a show like When Calls the Heart is so rare. The show has kind of become a part of me, and I think it shows that Hallmark has one of the most loyal fan bases out there. They really care about When Calls the Heart and continue to show up and invest their time to watch these characters.”
He also expressed appreciation for the fan community, saying:
“I also enjoy attending events where you see everybody and get to know how passionate they are that they’re willing to travel from all over to meet you. It’s definitely a blessing, that’s for sure.”
For now, the question remains: Will Lucas Bouchard continue to grace Hope Valley in Season 14, or is this the beginning of a new chapter for Chris McNally beyond Hallmark?
Fans can only hope that, wherever the story goes, Lucas’ charm, heart, and loyalty will remain a part of their screens for years to come.
