‘Fans of “When Calls the Heart” have come to expect emotional depth and tightly woven story arcs with each season finale, and Season 12’s “Must Be Gold” certainly delivered.
From dramatic resolutions to heartwarming farewells, the finale had its fair share of standout moments. But what if one of the most powerful emotional beats never made it to air?
As it turns out, that’s exactly what happened.
In a recent episode of The Official Hearties Aftershow, new showrunner Joy Gregory shared a surprising behind-the-scenes decision that reshaped the finale.
A scene revealing a major development for Martin Cummins’ character, Henry Gowen, was filmed—but ultimately left on the cutting room floor.
Henry Was Set to Become a Grandfather
“We had a story about Henry being a grandfather,” Gregory revealed, describing what was meant to be a subtle but meaningful subplot.
The plan was to show Henry receiving a letter with the life-changing news that Rachel and Christopher had welcomed a child. The moment would have unfolded as a quiet, reflective beat in the final episode.
But in the whirlwind of tying up storylines and bidding farewell to beloved characters, choices had to be made. “We were just trying to put bows on everybody’s story and choices had to be made,” Gregory explained. “Oh, we can’t give up Allie and Angela saying goodbye. They have to say goodbye on screen.”
In a finale packed with heartfelt goodbyes and cliffhangers—Elizabeth leaving Hope Valley with Little Jack, Nathan, and Allie following close behind, and the discovery of gold—there simply wasn’t space to fit it all.
And so, Henry’s would-be grandfather moment was sacrificed for more urgent, emotionally resonant on-screen farewells.
“I’m certainly sorry that we lost Martin’s beautiful work in those scenes and that’s always regrettable,” Gregory added. “But ultimately in sacrificing that story, we realized we’ve gained something great here, which is we’re not denying Hearties the on-screen experience of Christopher finally proposing to Rachel, finally marrying her, becoming a parent. We don’t want to dispose of all of that value in a letter that he receives from off-screen action.”
Why Henry Took a Back Seat in Season 12
Longtime fans may have noticed Henry’s quieter presence throughout the season. That wasn’t accidental. Writer Allie Deveraux noted that this was an intentional move, one rooted in the character’s long arc of redemption and inner turmoil.
“He’s been through a lot of turmoil,” Deveraux said. “We just needed to find some time for him in true peace so we could get him to where we need him to be for this story that’s coming in season 13.”
After years of struggle and atonement, Henry finally found space for peace in Season 12. While that meant fewer scenes this time around, it set the stage for what’s to come.
What’s Next for Henry in Season 13?
Although the grandfather storyline was left unresolved, fans shouldn’t worry about Henry fading into the background. Both Gregory and Deveraux hinted at much bigger things on the horizon for the character.
“We’ve got something really nice cooking for Henry,” Gregory teased. “I’m very excited about it.”
Deveraux echoed that excitement, adding, “I’m so excited with what we’re doing with Henry. It’s really fun. We spent a lot of time talking about it so far in the last six weeks and I’m really excited about the story.”
It seems that Henry’s story is far from over—in fact, it’s about to get a fresh chapter filled with promise and, perhaps, a well-earned sense of joy. Season 13 could finally give viewers the emotional payoff they’ve been waiting for.
