When Calls The Heart spoilers and updates tease that there’s a reason why the show didn’t go for a Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) adoption plot. The series’ creator, Brian Bird, explained why they decided to go with a pregnancy story instead.

Fans know that Rosemary and Lee (Kavan Smith) have been struggling with infertility issues. Given that Rosemary is having difficulties getting pregnant, a lot of fans assumed that they would eventually decide to adopt a child. However, they were surprised when the show opted for an unexpected pregnancy storyline.

Viewers may recall that Rosemary suspected that she was pregnant during the earlier part of season 9. Given that there were no pregnancy tests at that time, she had no choice but to wait to make sure. She didn’t tell Lee yet because she wasn’t sure that she was really pregnant. But during the season finale, she was overwhelmed with joy when she told Lee that she is expecting a baby.

When Calls The Heart – Goes For An Adoption Story

In an interview with JLJ Media on YouTube, Bird shared that they considered the adoption plot.

“When you set up a storyline about infertility, you have to pay it off somehow,” he said.

“And we knew that ultimately we had to get there. There was some thought about, ‘Well maybe they adopt.’ So we played with that a little bit… So that was a possibility and that would’ve been a very heartwarming kind of story to tell,” he explained.

Viewers of the show know that there’s an orphanage in Brookfield that Lee and Rosemary love to visit. The existence of this place made it possible for the couple to adopt a baby. For those who follow the spinoff, When Hope Calls, focuses its story on that place.

When Calls The Heart – Brian Bird Lauds Pascale Hutton For Impeccable Performance

Bird only had great things to say about Pascale Hutton. The storyline suited her very well, especially because she’s an excellent mother in real life. The actress managed to take her character through all the emotions of hoping and praying that she’ll get pregnant as well as feeling disappointment.

Bird said that Rosemary’s storyline is “one of the great arcs of the season.” He also recalled Lee’s reaction to the news. While in his pajamas, he ran out to tell everyone the good news. Bird said that it was such a victorious way to end the season. Fans are still waiting for Hallmark Channel to renew the show for season 10.
