In tonight’s When Calls The Heart episode, the radio was really taking off. Even the kids were now taking part. They were hosting the children’s minute and telling each other how to make some extra cash for comic books as well as magazines. The kids of Hope Valley were becoming independent.
This went for Allie also. She was turning a big birthday and she wanted to spend it with her friends. Not her father. She instead told him maybe he should take Elizabeth out on a date.
They’ve never had an official date. They’ve been on picnics with their kids. They’ve had family dinners. They see each other in town and none of that counted as an actual date.
Nathan realized that for himself after talking to his daughter. He tried to rectify it. He tried to get a minute alone with Elizabeth and it didn’t work out. He tried to sneak her into the Mountie office only the cadet was still there. Oliver wasn’t too bad. He was a smart kid.
He wanted to devote his life to the Mounties. Nathan liked him and that’s why he was disappointed when he learned Oliver’s secret. Oliver can barely write. He can read. It was his writing and comprehension level that was subpar. And luckily Elizabeth was a teacher.
Elizabeth promised Nathan that she could help Oliver. She was going to be tutoring on the side. Or at least she was until she learned that he was lying. He claimed he went to school at Briarcliff in Hamilton. He didn’t know that same school has been closed for years.
Elizabeth knew that because she has a friend that used to teach there and a quick phone call confirmed that the school was in fact closed. Oliver either didn’t have an official learning or he was deliberating lying about where he went to school.
Oliver wasn’t the only one with a secret. Lee was up to something. He returned to Hope Valley after giving hope of a National Park. He no longer trusted Lucas or his word and so he went home. He then started making a bunch of appointments. He talked to Bill about updating his will.
He talked to Faith about a physical. The one person he wasn’t talking to was his wife. Rosemary has no idea why Lee was making all these appointments. She found out from the people he was talking to. They accidentally revealed it to her because they thought she already knew about Lee.
Only she doesn’t know. Rosemary got caught in a coin collection thing. Someone dropped off a rare coin at the grocery store and she was looking for its real owner. The coin was quite valuable. It also made for a great story in the paper.
No one came forward by the time that Rosemary learned her husband was keeping secrets. Lee didn’t even tell her everything about what happened with Lucas. Lucas’s scandalous past was being brought up in the papers again and so he returned to Hope Valley to escape them. And he found out that Lee was using his lodgings to house hazelnuts.
Lee also planned a camping trip. Rosemary found out about that trip. She roped in Elizabeth and they began following Lee. It was while Elizabeth was away that Oliver decided to do the right thing. Oliver handed in his resignation. He didn’t believe he deserve to be a Mountie.
He lied about his schooling. He was failing all his tests. He thought it would just be better if he left on his own accord. He gave Nathan his two week notice. Nathan was shocked by that and he would have gone to Elizabeth if he could.
Elizabeth wasn’t in town at that time. She followed Lee with Rosemary. They found out that Lee wanted to name a hiking trail after Goldie. He admitted to Rosemary that Lucas was scaling down the size of the park.
He was also changing the name. Lee thought creating and naming a hiking trail would still honor his daughter. It might also keep Rosemary from yelling at Lucas. It was actually quite of sweet of him. Rosemary appreciated the gesture. She and Lee finished the trail and Elizabeth returned to town.
Nathan told her about Oliver resigning. She admitted to him that he didn’t have any official education. He basically lied on the application with the Mounties and so Nathan was grateful he quit. He would have had to fire him if he hadn’t. He admitted as much to Elizabeth.
The two of them then got into a fight because Elizabeth didn’t think it was fair that Oliver was being pushed out. She created a lesson plan to help bring up his reading and writing. He’ll be proficient within a few months. It soon won’t mattered that he lied.
Nathan didn’t see it that way. He was more black and white about these things. What mattered to him was that Oliver lied. He didn’t care about the reason behind it. Nathan was eventually convinced by Elizabeth as well as Bill to at least talk to Oliver. Get his backstory. Nathan did so.
He found out that Oliver was a foster kid. His last foster family didn’t think he needed school because they had a farm. They thought that Oliver could just stay on as a farmhand. It was Oliver that wanted something more. He wanted his life to have meaning and that’s when he considered joining the Mounties.
Nathan liked that Oliver was so committed. He also empathized with him. He could have turned his foster parents in and he didn’t because he has a great sense of loyalty. Even to people who didn’t deserve it. Nathan came to see that Oliver deserved the chance to be a Mountie and so he covered for him with his boss.
As for Lee, he reached the age where his father died. It made him worry that he’d die too at that age. He updated his will. He got his physical. He was completely health and might live long enough to see his grandchildren. It was because of him reaching that age that Lee wanted to leave a legacy behind for his only child.
It won’t be a National Park, but it will be something. Lucas owed them that much. He escaped to Hope Valley to escape the press and unfortunately the one person he kept running into was Edie Martell. The same woman that ruined his plans for a National Park. She was in town visiting her uncle the cattleman. And she was everywhere.
And Rosemary found out who out the backstory of the coin. It was apparently stolen in a train robbery back in 1907 and now it will make Rosemary’s news hour get a lot more interesting.
THE END!
