Volunteering gives a great sense of accomplishment and love as these When Calls the Heart stars found out while helping out at an equine rescue.
As Hallmark fans know, the network is all about caring and love and this is especially so for the stars of When Calls the Heart. Recently, several of the cast of the Hallmark Channel hit series volunteered at Win Place Home, a nonprofit organization rescuing former racehorses.
When Calls the Heart – Stars Volunteer At Win Place Home
Win Place Home is a nonprofit horse rescue that retrains former racehorses while finding them forever homes. Recently, Erin Krakow, Kevin McGarry, Jack Wagner, Ben Rosenbaum and Kayla Wallace visited the equine rescue. The actors were accompanied by Wonya Lucas, President and CEO of Crown Media, Lisa Hamilton Daly, EVP of Programming, and Laurie Ferneau, SVP of Development.
The group spent time volunteering in the spring sunshine at Win Place Home, located in the Los Angeles area. Both stars and executives spent the day performing many chores that keep the horse rescue going. These chores included feeding and walking the horses, cleaning tack and generally keeping the horses calm.
When Calls The Heart – Giving Back To The community
Erin Krakow told Parade.com that she was so grateful that Hallmark included them in this opportunity to get to know Win Place Home.
“It always feels good to give back to the community, but doing so with horses made it feel extra special. I’ve grown particularly fond of horses while working with them on When Calls the Heart, and witnessing the incredible sanctuary [founder C.J. Wilson] has created for them really warmed my heart.”
Meanwhile, Ben Rosenbaum, who plays Hope Valley’s newest mayor, Mike Hickam, explained that volunteering helps him both on and off the set. He said that the problems of the world often feel too big to tackle. However, getting out and volunteering for any cause can “focus that anxious energy for good.” Hicken said that this also alleviates that sense of helplessness, adding, “It’s a win-win.”
“It feels a little extra special, extra good especially to be around horses and out in nature,” Rosenbaum added.
Kayla Wallace who plays Fiona Miller on When Calls the Heart was quick to second that sentiment. She said she enjoys learning about different causes and giving back when she can. Meanwhile, getting to know the people behind awesome organizations like Win Place Home is also rewarding. She said it was wonderful to see so many horses and other animals in a comfortable environment.

“I enjoyed hearing about each horse’s story of how they ended up there and it was awesome to see firsthand how Win Place Home is setting up a comfortable life and future for them,” Kayla added.
Meanwhile, Crown Media generously gave much-needed fresh produce and feed for the horses. About the generosity, Lucas said: “Crown Media Family Networks volunteering is important because when we think about our mission and our core it is about putting care and kindness into the world.”
When Calls The Heart – More About Win Place Home
Win Place Home was founded in 2015 to offer a good home to former racehorses. Following their racing career, horses are often discarded, or even euthanized, without a place they can call home. So far, the horse rescue has successfully re-homed 56 thoroughbreds and at this time, has more than two dozen horses being trained for life beyond the racetrack.
