Why The Strike Didn’t Shut Down Filming For Hallmark’s When Calls The Heart

You might be wondering why select shows get to resume filming while the majority of Hollywood movies and shows have been delayed, shut down, or even cancelled due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Remember when Tom Cruise couldn’t get a waiver to promote the latest movie in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise?

Just know that a faith-based series, “The Chosen” was the first to obtain a waiver to resume filming. So it is possible, not just for longtime A-listers like Tom Cruise.

When Calls The Heart

As more productions join “The Chosen” to resume filming by obtaining the waiver, Hallmark’s long-running Western romance drama “When Calls the Heart” has joined them.

Since the series is an independent production, they’re not directly related to the strikes’ demands and so can carry on filming.

This will allow the series to film Season 11 following season 10’s premiere on Hallmark Channel last weekend. The drama series, which premiered in 2014

following a two-hour television movie pilot that aired in 2013, was inspired by Janette Oke’s book of the same name. It follows Erin Krakow’s Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher, born and raised as a member of the high society.

Krakow appeard in the series alongside Martin Cummins, Jack Wagner, Pascale Hutton, Kavan Smith, Andrea Brooks, Chris McNally, Kevin McGarry, and Viv Leacock.

A spinoff, “When Hope Calls,” was announced in 2018, arriving in 2019. Although it originally aired on Hallmark’s streaming service, Hallmark Movies Now, before moving on to Hallmark Channel in 2020, it later moved to its rival, Great American Family, in 2021 for its second season run.
