The Actors’ Casting Was Announced On An Interview Via Zoom

The casting announcement for BTG took place in a lively Zoom interview, featuring not only the new actors but also other cast members. It also included Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth and Michele Val Jean, the creator and head writer; with palpable excitement, Val Jean unveiled the news of their casting.

She said “I’ve truly come to understand the phrase ‘chomping at the bit’ because I’ve been bursting to share this moment,” she expressed. “It’s a true honor, a privilege, and a joy to welcome our latest cast members, who are not just legendary soap opera stars and exceptional talents.” She continued, “…but also two of my absolute favorite people in the world.”

Jon Describes His New Character

Lindstrom painted a vivid picture of his latest character, portraying him as a gentle-hearted entrepreneur. Joey hails from a challenging background, having clawed his way to success, yet he’s managed to retain his charisma.

As the owner of a casino, Joey operates in a realm akin to a bar for someone struggling with addiction. It’s a setting where chaos can easily arise, and trouble follows closely in its wake.

However, Joey is not a fan of turmoil; he possesses a keen ability to eliminate discord but prefers to sidestep it whenever possible.

This Is Not The First Time Lindstrom And McClain Have Worked Together

Lindstrom and McClain have a history of collaboration that goes beyond the ordinary. Their characters shared a romantic connection on the now-defunct ATWT, and during the peak of the Covid pandemic in 2020, Lindstrom stepped in as a body double for Matthew Ashford (Jack Deveraux). This was in a passionate kissing scene with McClain, who was his real-life wife, playing Jennifer Deveraux on DAYS at the time.

The couple got engaged in 2012 and celebrated their marriage on Valentine’s Day in 2014, but by April 2025, they announced their separation. In a now-deleted Instagram message, they expressed, their feelings, and as well an amicable divorce.

Jon And Michele Van Jean’s Professional Affiliations

Val Jean and Lindstrom have worked together since the early 1990s at GH. Lindstrom first appeared in Port Charles as the serial killer Ryan in 1992, and the next year, the show introduced Ryan’s good twin brother, psychiatrist Kevin.

In a 2021 interview with Soap Opera Digest, Lindstrom attributed his success in playing both roles to Val Jean, who was part of GH’s writing team. He said, “The character was created to replace Ryan with someone who looked like me and didn’t need redemption, since Ryan was beyond saving. Claire Labine gave Michele the opportunity, and we discussed how to make Kevin different from Ryan.

Jon Continues Talking About His Experience With Van Jean

Michele is very articulate and well-read; I believe Kevin’s way of speaking wouldn’t have developed as it did without her.” Kevin’s well-known connection with Lucy Coe, portrayed by Lynn Herring, was largely her idea.

Lindstrom explained, “She suggested the pairing, thinking, ‘What if Lucy goes to therapy, not because she feels she needs it, but because she finds Kevin attractive?’

She brought this idea to Claire, who then told Michele to develop it further; and she really did! The storyline of Lucy pursuing Kevin, who was unsure about his feelings, was all her creation.

Jon Shares How Michele Van Jean Crafted The Lucy-Kevin Romance And The Ryan Saga

She crafted those scenes, making her essential to the process. Not only did she write the Kevin and Lucy moments, but she also took the lead on all the Kevin and Ryan scenes that followed.

She shared that the first important thing she wrote about Ryan was his initial confession at the police station with Sean Donely (John Reilly) and Mac Scorpio (John J. York).

She mentioned that she fell for his ‘crazy’ character in those moments and wanted to write about him whenever possible. Ryan was portrayed in a unique way, and only Michele could capture that.

Jon Respects Michele Van Jean Deeply

Lindstrom has a strong admiration for Val Jean. So, it’s not surprising that when he was asked about his favorite part of being in BTG, he said, “Michele Val Jean; that’s really all I can say. Everyone knows Michele is the best writer out there, even if other writers won’t admit it-she truly is the best.”

It remains to be seen if Lindstrom’s dedication to BTG will stop him from appearing on GH as Kevin, especially since Ryan was killed off in 2023. Kevin is currently happily married to Laura, the mayor of Port Charles, played by Genie Francis, and was last seen on screen in December 2024.
