Disney’s Pinocchio Gets A Life-action Adaptation, With Tom Hanks Playing Geppetto

On September 8, the Robert Zemeckis directed live-adaptation of Pinocchio will drop on Disney+. The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cynthia Erivo, Keegan-Michael Key, Luke Evans, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Lorraine Bracco.

Tom Hanks plays Geppetto, the woodcarver and clockmaker, that made Pinocchio and later wished him into being.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Miles from Netflix’s “The Haunting of Bly Manor”, plays Pinocchio.

The trailer begins with Geppetto reciting the popular prayer from the original movie: “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.”

The trailer is a series of flashes set to the favorite Disney tune, “When You Wish Upon A Star”, and we see highly detailed glimpses into Pinocchio’s world.

The director of “Forrest Gump”, Robert Zemeckis, has been brought on as director for the project, which also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the playful and understanding “conscience” Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John, and Luke Evans as the villainous Coachman. A new character named Sofia the Seagull, played by Lorraine Bracco, has been introduced into the script, signalling that there will be a major divergence from the source material.

The fairy from the original movie, known for her gleaming pale skin and red-lipped smile, will now be played by black American actress Cynthia Erivo.

Disney – Luke Evans On His “Scary” Character That’s A “Dramatic Coachman”

Evans, known in the world of Disney live-action musicals for playing Gaston in the 2017 retelling of “The Beauty and the Beast”, said that he’s grateful that his character looks nothing like its original appearance in the 1940 animated classic.

“Things are not going to be the same as they were in the animation. The storyline is very, very similar, but there were some characters that [Zemeckis] was able to dramatically enhance, and the Coachman is one of those,” said Evans. “I get to use all of my musical theater experience and skills in this character. I can’t tell you too much because I want it to be a surprise, but there are some really wonderful gifts that he gave me as an actor with the character.”

“You see a coachman in many different ways,” he added. “I don’t want to give away anymore than that. But he isn’t just the average human being, if that means anything to you. He’s a very unusual creature. He’s rather terrifying. If you think Gaston is scary, wait until you meet the Coachman!”
