Dune Spoilers – Part Two Gets A Late 2023 Release Date
The news of the sequel was confirmed by the film’s production company Legendary this Tuesday after Dune pulled in the highest three-day sales since Warner Bros. started its simultaneous release schedule, in which Warner Bros. films premiere both in theaters and on HBO Max for 30 days.
The sci-fi film, directed by famous director Denis Villeneuve, premiered on theaters and HBO Max on Oct. 22, grossing $40.1 million in its opening weekend.
“This is only the beginning…Thank you to those who have experienced @dunemovie so far, and those who are going in the days and weeks ahead,” Legendary posted on Twitter, along with an orange image of the words “Dune: Part Two.” Legendary added, “We’re excited to continue the journey!”
The movie, which is based on a 1965 work of the same name by sci-fi author Frank Herbert and follows the 1984 film by David Lynch, only covered roughly half of the events that take place in the book.
The movie stars some already famous faces like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa.
Per a report by Deadline, the second Dune film will be going straight to theaters with no HBO Max simultaneous streaming.
It is expected to hit theaters on Oct. 20, 2023.
Dune Part 2: Details
Not much is known about the upcoming film at this time. The director Villeneuve promised to give more attention to underdeveloped characters when fans lost it as a result of Zendaya’s super limited screen time.
“The credits were longer than Zendaya’s camera time in Dune,” one outraged fan wrote on Twitter.
Los Angeles Times reported that Zendaya appears on-screen for a total of seven minutes across Dune’s 2-hour-and-35-minute run.
In the movie, Zendaya, 25, plays Chani, who acts as the film’s official narrator and appears in snippets throughout the movie in dreams of the protagonist Paul, played by Timothée Chalamet. Spoiler alert: the two meet at the end, with Chani warning Paul, “This is only the beginning.”
In the future, director Villeneuve is assuring fans that he will be bringing Zendaya’s character to the forefront of the movie.
“There are some characters that are less developed that I’m keeping for the second film — that’s the way I found the equilibrium,” he said. “We tried in this movie to stay as close as possible to Paul’s experience. Then, in the second one, I will have time to develop some characters that were left aside a little bit. That’s the theory. I hope it will work.”
