Bioware’s “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” was released back in 2003 and it was considered as one of the best “Star Wars” games in history. Given that, a possible remake or sequel would have to meet the benchmark set by its predecessor.
It would reportedly “integrate elements from the first two games, [the first KOTOR and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords], in order to bring certain things into the current Star Wars canon.”
A Remake or Sequel?
In a report by Cinelinx, it seems like the remake of the game was in the pipeline way back in 2016. However, EA didn’t pursue it and the project didn’t materialize until now. EA has a lot of things going on right now like the “Jedi: Fallen Order” sequels. However, it seems like their doing well with their “Star Wars” License.
The news of a potential remake or sequel seems to match the recent comment made by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. She said their company is working on a project that is “Knights of the Old Republic”-related. Not only that, some even think that a film is on the horizon, with insiders saying that the project will involve Game of Thrones’ D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.
However, it remains unknown which of EA’s developers will handle the said project. It could be BioWare or it could be Obsidian. Still, nothing’s been confirmed.
Cancellation of Kotor 3
Moreover, “KOTOR 3” was canceled last year although it’s always been imagined to be a trilogy, according to Obsidian. Chris Avellone, the Lead writer from Reboot Develop, said that “Kotor 3” would have focused on tracing back Sith Lords’ origin and that they already dropped hints as to what Darth Revan was doing in the second installment.
No confirmation about a new “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” has been released yet. But if the rumors are true, “Star Wars” fans are rooting for the new project to give justice to the legacy built by the Kotor series.
