Johnny Depp Fans Threaten Boycott Over ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Replacement Snub [Watch The Trailer!]

Johnny DeppJohnny Depp earned his place in the Harry Potter universe with his starring roles in “Fantastic Beasts.” As a result, fans felt shocked at the news that another actor had replaced Depp in the newest “Fantastic Beasts” film, “The Secrets of Dumbledore”. But beyond shock, these fans decided to act, threatening a boycott of the movie.

‘Fantastic Beasts’ Spoilers – Trailer Premiere Produces Fan Fury!

When the trailer for “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” premiered this week, fans flocked to view the sneak peek of the highly anticipated movie. But rather than delight, many felt dumbfounded. As the trailer revealed, Mads Mikkelsen has replaced Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, per PopCulture.

As for exactly why Depp got snubbed, insiders point to the actor’s failing to win a defamation lawsuit linked to his ex-wife, Amber Heard. That lawsuit loss coupled with ongoing physical abuse allegations from Heard reportedly caused the studio to fire Johnny. Mikkelsen then took on the role.

Depp’s absence has caused fans to threaten a boycott. Some headed to Twitter to share the plan and voice their outrage. And the general consensus seemed evident. Johnny’s past performance as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald should have earned him the opportunity to repeat the role in the newest “Fantastic Beasts” film. 

“Johnny Depp will always be our Grindelwald,” tweeted one fan. “Justice for Johnny!” And with more than 5,000 likes, others clearly agreed. Some fans even slammed the studio for snubbing Depp. “I’ll never forgive Warner Bros for taking Grindewald away from Johnny Depp. Having him in the Harry Potter universe was literally a dream come true and they ruined everything,” tweeted another.

In addition to turning to Twitter to attack Warner Bros. for firing Johnny Depp, some fans headed to the “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore” trailer to vent their views. The studio posted the video with a plot summary that showed Depp’s replacement. 

“In theaters April 15, 2022, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is the newest adventure in the Wizarding World™ created by J.K. Rowling. Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?”

In response to that question, fans focused on the absence of Johnny Depp. Warner Bros. has caused “negative attention…due to their mistreatment of Depp,” stated one fan. “I’m really sad to see Johnny gone,” chimed in another.  Check out the trailer below to see what you think!

Ultimately, whether posting on YouTube or Twitter, fans have taken up “Justice for Johnny” as their rallying cry. And with that comes the demand to boycott “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.” One fan summed up the goal: “On April 15, 2022, use your power as consumers to boycott ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.’ Warner Brothers needs to know consumers don’t support studios that fire a proven victim/survivor of domestic violence while continuing to employ his proven abuser Amber Heard.”
