Johnny Depp Gets First Big Movie Role Since Amber Heard Scandal

Johnny DeppJohnny Depp finally landed his first major film role since his Amber Heard scandal began. And despite Hollywood’s cancel culture, Depp remains a desirable actor in Paris. As a result, the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” star will travel to France to star in the currently untitled film.

Find out all about Johnny Depp’s new role. And catch up on how cancel culture has continued to impact the actor below.

Johnny Depp Scores Major Film Role Amid Cancel Culture Impact

A popular French director Maiwenn (Polisse) just ignored the U.S. entertainment industry’s cancel culture to cast Johnny Depp, per the Hollywood Reporter. And that means a visit to Paris in the near future. In the upcoming movie, Depp will portray French king Louis XV.

Filmed on location in summer 2022, the movie will see Johnny spending time at the Versailles Palace and in Paris. Why Not Productions (A Prophet) will produce the movie from its Paris base. And with Wild Bunch International managing worldwide sales, producers hope to introduce the movie to potential buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin in February.

Nominated on three occasions for the coveted Oscar award, Depp remains popular throughout Europe. In 2021, Johnny received lifetime achievement awards at the Karlovy Vary and San Sebastian film festivals. And his star turn in the new film could add to his award list. It also will give Depp a new challenge in debuting his ability to speak the French language.

Amber Heard’s Domestic Violence Allegations Impact Johnny Depp

But in the United States, Johnny Depp continues to face the impact from his ex-wife Amber Heard’s domestic violence allegations. Most recently, Warner Bros. chose to replace the actor in its third film in the beloved “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. As a result, Mads Mikkelsen stepped into the role that Depp had played.

And the cancel culture impact in the United States continues as revealed in the outcome of Johnny’s most recent film. That movie, Andrew Levitas’s “Minamata,” showed Johnny portraying W. Eugene Smith. The American photographer became famed for documenting how mercury poisoning affected Japan’s coastal communities in the 1970s.

After “Minamata” debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in 2020, MGM chose the movie for release in the United States. But as a result of the scandal, MGM shelved it. Last December, independents ILBE and Samuel Goldwyn finally tested a limited release.

But director Maiwenn has shown that she’s willing to take a chance on Depp regardless of the U.S. impact of Amber Heard’s allegations. And her movie starring Johnny will mark her first experience in helming a period drama. Thus far, Maiwenn has won honors for her movies “Polisse,” which won the Jury Prize in Cannes, and “Mon Roi,” which resulted in best actress awards for its star Emmanuelle Bercot.

Tell us what you think. Do you believe that Johnny Depp could still star in U.S.-based movies despite the scandal? And after you’ve shared your views, check back on our site for more movie and celebrity news!
