The film of our highly loved childhood cartoon “Barbie” which was released on July 21, was nothing short of our expectations. It was everything we hoped for and more.
From the storyline to the Barbie lead cast Margot Robbie, to the Ken cast Ryan Gosling, etc., everything was top notch, the director Greta Gerwig really deserves an award.
No wonder it earned $155 million in the U.S. on its first week, completely knocking out Oppenheimer from the top chart.
Although the movie turned out super-duper great, a lot of things took place behind the scenes before the filming and during the filming. Stay tuned as we let you in on some Barbie secrets you knew nothing about.
Barbie — How Ryan Gosling Got Casted As Ken And Why Some Initial Barbie Casts Dropped Out
In an interview on “SXM” with Ryan, and Greta, Margot shared how she always wanted Ryan to be her Ken. She shared she was willing to go to any length to have him cast as Ken. She went on to share that Ryan’s character was even written on the script as “Ken Ryan Gosling,” and that she and Greta didn’t back down. “We pretty much wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
At that point, Greta chimed in, “We just kept bothering you. Margot was like, ‘Is it weird if I go to his house?’ I was like, ‘Don’t go to his house. We’re just gonna stay put.’ Send a follow-up.”
Ryan on his part told “Vogue” that Margot went out of her way to send him presents daily. “She left a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming.” He continued, “They were all beach-related. Like puka shells, or a sign that says ‘Pray for surf.'”
Ryan said that at first he “never quite figured out” what his character as “Beach” was but, as time went by he “Felt like she was trying to help Ken understand, through these gifts that she was giving.”
Some popular stars who were initially casted as Barbie dropped out for one reason or another. One of them, Amy Schumer who was the first lead choice, gave her reason for dropping out during her appearance on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in June.
The comedian said, “I think we said it was scheduling conflict, that’s what we said, but yeah, it really was just, like, creative differences. But you know what? There’s, like, a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool. So, I will be seeing that movie.”
With the absence of Amy, Anne Hathaway was chosen as the lead but she too also dropped out. Then came Margot. After Margot got the lead she tried to recruit Gal Gadot as the second Barbie but Gal was unavailable.
Saoirse Ronan was also supposed to be one of the Barbies but she canceled, speaking with people, Saoirse said, “I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there. There was a whole character I was going to play—another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”
