Neighbours finally reveals identity of Mackenzie’s father – and it’s a familiar face!
Spoilers have now confirmed that Mackenzie Hargreaves’ father Grant will visit Erinsborough next week.
Viewers know that Mackenzie came to Erinsborough in hopes to track down her father, with whom she hasn’t had contact with for years. Not because he lives there, but because Shane Rebecchi did, who Mackenzie hopes can lead her to her father.
Since revealing the truth to Shane, he has been keen to help her, but when Mackenzie found out that some misinformed advice from Shane years ago led Grant to reject who she really is, she was left hurt.
However, Shane still manages to track Grant down and bring him to Erinsborough. When he sees her for the first time after her transition, he accidently calls her by her dead name – the name she was assigned at birth. However, Mackenzie is forgiving and once she’s corrected him they share a meaningful conversation regarding both the past and the future.
She’s keen to find out when her father never made contact after her mother died, but he gets defensive and claims it’s because he didn’t know what he would find. Making it clear that nothing has changed, Grant leaves Mackenzie, insisting that he will always consider her to be a male.
After Mackenzie flees, devastated, Shane decides it’s time to give Grant some home truth. Feeling like it’s his chance to redeem himself after giving Grant bad advice, Shane challenges the narrow-minded views and urges him to be understanding towards his child.
Grant is stunned by the change in Shane’s attitudes and starts to reconsider his own views. For this reason he tells Mackenzie that he wants to start over with her, referring to her by her real name.
Grant is played by Paul Mercurio, best known for his role in Strictly Ballroom and for being a judge on Australia’s Dancing with the Stars.
