‘Emily In Paris’ Creator Reveals Why He Chose Rome As Emily’s Next Travel Destination

Alert! Alert! Emily has left Paris and has now landed in Rome for the part two of season 4. Spoiler: there’s a mystery man and the love triangle has more or less gotten resolved. Here’s why the show’s creator chose to send the beloved titular character to Rome.

‘Emily In Paris’ Creator Says He Wants “To Expand Footprint of the Show”

In this new season of the hit Netflix show, series creator Darren Star was keen to expand Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper’s story with the addition of her international travel.

Star shared his reason for sending Emily to Italy in his chat with PEOPLE at the premiere for season 4 part 2, which took place in Rome on Tuesday, Sept. 10. He explained that he “wanted to expand the footprint of the show” and “broaden out the universe” with this fourth installment.

“But also, Rome to me is like the other great romantic city in Europe, and it’s a bit of a yin and yang to Paris,” Star noted. “And also the story took us here. You know, Italy is — just like France — sort of known for fashion, design, style, in a different way.”

Darren Star Reveals Audrey Hepburn References in Season 4 Were Consciously Done

If you’re seeing similarities between Emily’s dress code this season to Hepburn’s legendary style, it’s probably because the showrunners were inspired by the actress and used her as a sort of style reference to mark the new phase of Emily’s adventures.

They were “definitely sort of inspired by [Hepburn] and referencing and all that,” he said. “Throughout the show, and not just in Italy, but in Megève, [France] in the Alps, we sort of nod to Charade, her outfit in Charade. It was fun.”

Since its premiere in 2020, Emily has attracted a wide range of audiences, even surving multiple criticisms that might have easily sunk a weaker show.

However far they’ve come, creator Darren Star is hoping they can still go further, with hopes of season 5 getting greenlit. “There are some ideas. It’s really a fun story to keep telling,” he teased.
