Erik & Lyle Menendez Family Scheduled To Meet With New-Elected D.A. Regarding Resentencing Justice

Family members of the Menendez brothers are set to have a meeting with newly elected Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman to talk about decreased sentences.
Erik and Lyle have been serving prison sentences for over thirty years for the murder of their parents in 1989.

They were convicted in 1996 for the first-degree murder of their mom and dad, Kitty and José Menendez. The crime occurred in the family’s Beverly Hills home. The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment, with no parole.

Erik & Lyle Menendez Case – Family Members Support Release

During Erik and Lyle’s case, the defense noted that the two acted in self-defense due to years of sexual abuse from their father, José. New evidence has emerged as late, which supports this.

Erik & Lyle Menendez Family Scheduled To Meet With New-Elected D.A. Regarding Resentencing Justice

As per The Sun, about 20 family members are set to participate in a meeting with L.A. DA Hochman. The family is hoping the new Los Angeles district attorney will release them.

According to the report, the plan is to talk about Erik and Lyle’s alleged abuse history, the trauma that was caused, and their rehabilitation over the past three-plus decades.

In the past, the family of the Menendez brothers has emphasized that the two have taken responsibility for their actions and have made positive impacts within their community while imprisoned.

This meeting follows an announcement made by the past L.A. DA, George Gascón, in October 2024, where he sought resentencing for the brothers, which would essentially make them eligible for parole right away.

Erik & Lyle Menendez Case -New Evidence Has Surfaced

While Gascón’s announcement considered new evidence, he did not get re-elected as L.A.’s new DA. As such, Hochman has stated he wants a thorough review of the Menendez brother case before deciding about resentencing.

The family’s lawyers have expressed concern regarding the fairness of the review under Hochman.

After all, the new DA met with the attorney representing a family member against Erik and Lyle’s release. The family that supports the brothers believes they should get the same opportunity when it comes to him reviewing the case.

As per Newsweek, in a letter to Hochman, their lawyer, Bryan Freedman, questioned if the DA was impartial in the review process.

He encouraged Hochman to consider the viewpoint of the family members who have continued to have relationships with the brothers during their imprisonment.

The resentencing hearing takes place on Thursday, January 30, 2025, where Erik and Lyle’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, will not only ask for a decreased sentence but also a conviction reclassification from murder to manslaughter.

If this occurs, Erik and Lyle could immediately be released.
