First Teaser For Netflix’s “Matilda The Musical” Has Some Nostalgic Moments

If you’ve watched Matilda when you’re younger or read the famous story by children’s author Roald Dahl, watching the latest trailer will remind you of the previous works.

The show includes appearances from James Bond” star Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, young Alisha Weir as the title character and “Cruella’s” Emma Thompson as the villain.

Matilda – Emma Thompson Plays “Maltida The Musical’s” Primary Villain

Can you recognize Emma Thompson as the headmistress in Netflix‘s “Matilda the Musical” teaser clip? If you can, you’re probably in the top 1%, and cheers if you can recognize her from the first glance.

The 63-year-old actress sure looked intimidating as headmistress Miss Trunchbull in the clip, and a bit more chubby than we remember.

In the movie, Alisha Weir stars as the titular character Maltida, a studious young girl who develops magical abilities as a result of her advanced knowledge.

“Matilda Wormwood, criminals like you need a real lesson,” the Headmistress yells at the young Matilda in the video as the entire room watches in tense silence.

Maltida newly enrols at Crunchem Hall, where she soon learns that young students like herself are being treated badly by the wicked headmistress.

However, she finds understanding and compassion from her teacher Miss Honey, who helps her navigate tough school and home life.

Matthew Warchus has been named as the movie’s director, after he brought the Tony-winning musical to life in London and on Broadway. Dennis Kelly will be writing the script, with Tim Minchin providing the movie’s upbeat musical numbers.

An official synopsis of the movie describes it as “an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and summons the remarkable courage, against all odds, to help others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny. Standing up for what’s right, she’s met with miraculous results.”

Matilda – Resemblances To Former Matilda Productions

In 1988, Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” was released. In 1996, it was adapted into a movie directed by and starring Danny DeVito.

In the latest Netflix adaptation of the famous children’s story, we see a few scenes paying homage to the 1996 work.

We see the headmistress spinning a child around in a feat of anger, Miss Honey and Matilda enjoying a picnic on a bright cloudless day, a little boy forced to gorge himself on cake and frightened children.

Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical” debuts on Netflix this holiday season.
