Hype House: New Netflix Series That Delves Into The Sad Side Of Social Media Stardom

Hype HouseThe new Netflix series, Hype House, delves into the sad side of TikTok stardom.

Hype House is a reality TV show that revolves around the lives of a collection of TikTok stars, and it paints a depressing picture of young people opening their lives up daily to a ravenous viewership. Hype House is a collection of social media influencers thrown together in one house in the hills of Northwest Los Angeles. Accommodating around ten residents, between the ages of 17 and 23, the house seems to be a lonely place despite the large number of occupants.

Hype House – Public Display Of Extravagance

In a resplendent house set atop a desolate hill with nothing in the yard but a smattering of pine trees, and nothing in the driveway but an old colorfully adorned school bus, Hype House is every bit what the name claims it is – an intensively public display of extravagance and aimlessness.

Within, we discover a gathering of social media influencers from across the social media universe; YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. What do they do? We can see the group wandering around this extravagant house filming their relatively mundane day-to-day lives chasing the fame flame. In various stages of filming the hoard is often seen to be either bored, anxious, or distraught.

It seems that Hype House wants to film what goes on behind the scenes in the lives of people that are already constantly filming everything they do. Other than this, it seems unclear what other objective the show may have. Perhaps it seeks to put a more intimate face on social media celebrity, or perhaps it seeks to convince the world to take the social media influencer more seriously. It is difficult to tell at this point.

Hype House – It’s All About The Content

According to the Guardian’s Adrian Horton, Hype House is “a work-from-home reality show whose drama basically boils down to threatened income.” The co-founder of Hype House, Thomas Petrou is the 22-year-old leader of the house. In the first few episodes of the show, the drama seems to revolve around a developing division between Petrou and 18-year-old TikToker, Chase “Lil Huddy” Hudson, who readers may know for dating Charli D’Amelio.

Throughout the first few installments, we see a lot of complaining from Petrou about the lack of motivation from the other Hype House residents regarding posting content. The dynamic of Hype House seems so simple as to be almost boring. A certain number of videos a month are required of each resident in exchange for living free in this opulent yet distant house.

Hype House is now available to stream on Netflix. Come back here often for more spoilers, news, and updates.
