Who killed JonBenét Ramsey? For decades that answer has eluded everyone, but Netflix is hoping to go back to the beginning and draw the threads that were previously missed while the authorities worked to pin JonBenét’s murder on her family.
Here’s everything you can expect from the upcoming series, “The Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsay.”
Everyone Who Contributed To Making The Netflix Documentary
It was the day after Christmas and the Ramseys would wake up to a chilling truth. Their daughter had been kidnapped and the culprit had left a ransom note.
At least that was what they initially believed. That is until they found the body of their daughter lying dead in the basement.
It appeared that the culprit had sexually assaulted the beauty queen before killing her. And since all this seemed to happen in the safety of her parents’ house, the authorities were ready to work with the idea that they were the culprit.
However, while they based their investigation around the parents being the culprit, the trail leading to the perpetrator was growing cold. 28 years later, Netflix hopes it hasn’t cold enough for fresh eyes and investigation to catch in on the scent. Are you ready to play detective?
The media might have misrepresented the case at the time due to false information fed to them by the press, but it’s disturbing that almost three decades on, no one is paying the price for the murder of the young girl.
To make the documentary, director Joe Berlinger spoke to JonBenét’s father, John Ramsey, now 80, and the lawyers and journalists that covered the case.
To provide an even more rounded view, the documentary will feature recordings made by the now late Colorado Springs homicide detective Lou Smith, who came out of retirement to help with the solving of the beauty queen’s murder.
He would go on to leave 18 months later after becoming frustrated that the Boulder Police do not want to consider the possibility that an intruder had killed the young girl.
Director Joe Berlinger On How The JonBenét Ramsay Case Can Be Solved
Joe Berlinger is positive the advancement in DNA testing technology can aid in bringing justice for JonBenét and peace for her family.
“The first is that there were a bunch of crime scene objects that were sent to the crime lab in 1996 but were never tested. We need to do that testing. Also some things were tested, but the technology was primitive at the time. Those things need to be retested,” Berlinger said.
He continued: “But the most important DNA test that I think would provide a really good opportunity to solve the crime is the existing DNA in the case that involves a mixed sample of JonBenét’s blood and the unidentified male DNA — not linked to any family member — mixed in with her blood. If JonBenét’s DNA is separated from the perpetrator’s DNA, then the perpetrator’s DNA can then be expanded and put into genealogical DNA, like 23andMe. That is a new technology that has been used very successfully and has recently become a major tool for solving cold cases.”
Will this famous cold case finally be put to rest 28 years later?
