Erik and Lyle Menendez continue to serve life sentences for the murder of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez; however, new evidence emerging in the case could see them receiving an early release.
One of their biggest supporters in this endeavor is their Aunt Joan VanderMolen, who happens to be their mom’s sister.
Why Does Joan VanderMolen Support Kyle & Lyle Menendez?
Most know by now about how Erik and Lyle killed their parents, Kitty and Jose in 1989. The two different documentaries on Netflix have brought this case back to the forefront of the public eye.
The Menendez brothers stated they had been abused during their trial, but the jury didn’t buy it.
They were found guilty of their parents’ murders and sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole. As new evidence has surfaced that supports their abuse claims, their lawyers are hoping Erik and Lyle’s sentencing can be re-looked at.
At the age of 92, their Aunt Joan supports them. Via Vanity Fair, she states she believes the claims of abuse by Erik and Lyle, noting, “They didn’t deserve any of this. They were used and abused and there seems to be no end to it.”
While Joan does feel bad about Kitty’s death, she also believes that her sister should’ve left Jose, as Erik and Lyle were mistreated throughout their entire childhood. She states, “The boys tried to get her to leave, and they promised her they would take care of her and everything.”
The Menendez Brothers Are Getting A New Trial Hearing
The good news is that Erik and Lyle Menendez are getting a new hearing. L.A. District Attorney George Gascón announced earlier this month that it would allow the courts to review the latest evidence that has surfaced, which includes former Menudo singer Roy Rossello, coming forward to reveal that Jose Menendez had drugged and raped him as a teen.
