Netflix has finally come to the rescue of the supernatural drama Manifest after its original channel NBC balked at renewing it for another seasonal run.

The show premiered on NBC on September 24, 2018 and has already produced three seasons and 42 episodes to date.

After NBC dropped the show, Netflix added the series to their service on June 12, where it immediately topped the viewing charts, leading Netflix to sign on for a fourth and final season, therefore saving the show from an untimely demise.

Manifest explores the lives of several passengers and crew of a commercial airliner, which disappeared and later resurfaced after missing for more than five years.

Manifest To Run Their Farewell Season On Netflix

News of the show’s renewal for yet another run came on August 28, more than 10 weeks after it was officially grounded by NBC following its cliffhanger-filled Season 3 finale.

The series’ fourth and final season will reportedly span 20 episodes, which will be split into parts that are yet to be announced.

“What started years ago as a flight of fancy deep in my imagination has evolved into the jet engine journey of a lifetime,” the series creator Jeff Rake said in a statement.

“Never in my wildest dreams could I have envisioned the worldwide outpouring of love and support for this story, its characters, and the team who work so hard to bring it all to life. That we will be able to reward the fans with the ending they deserve moves me to no end. On behalf of the cast, the crew, the writers, directors, and producers, thank you to Netflix, to Warner Bros., and of course to the fans. You did this.”

Following the aftermath of the series cancellation, Rake shared his frustration with fans, saying, “I’m devastated by NBC’s decision to cancel us.” He added: “That we’ve been shut down in the middle [of a planned six-season run] is a gut punch to say the least…. You deserve an ending to your story.”

In the weeks that followed the show’s cancellation, Rake assured fans that he hasn’t given up on trying to find a home that will allow the series to conclude gracefully. “We’re trying to find a way to conclude the series. Could take a week, a month, a year,” he revealed, as he worked to find financers and a home to keep the show going, or at the very least, offer a wrap-up movie.

Netflix Greenlights Manifest After Incredible Ratings Performance

The streaming service’s deal with Warner Bros. included all the previous seasons, which are now set to premiere on the streamer around the world in the coming months.

Following its surprise cancellation, Manifest managed to remain in circulation in pop culture conversation by climbing to the very top of the Nielsen streaming charts, and by claiming the number one spot on Netflix’s popularity poll for a near-record 27 straight days. This prompted news that renewal discussions were ongoing at Netflix.

“Since its premiere on Netflix in June, Manifest has proven very popular with our members,” Bela Bajaria, Netflix Head of Global TV, noted. “Jeff Rake and his team have crafted a beguiling mystery that has viewers around the world on the edge of their seats and believing again in second chances, and we’re thrilled that they will bring fans some closure with this final, super-sized season.”

Perhaps the upcoming season will answer the questions that fans have always been asking since the show’s trailer dropped: what made the Montego Flight 828 disappear and what made it reappear. Is it a coincidence or is there something, or someone, on the plane that singled out the flight? And where do the passengers get their “callings” from?
